INVENTOR WITNESSES *lff'or'sfiien THOMAS FORSTNER, OF NEW ULM, MINNESOTA.
REIN-COUPLING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1908.
Application filed February 13. 1906- Serial No. 300.884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Tnouns FoRs'rNEn, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at New Ulm, in the county of Brown and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Reinloupling, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to rein couplings and has for its object to provide a coupling which is very simple and cheap in construction and one which can be easily and quickly connected and disconnected when desired.
Another object of my invention is to provide a coupling which will do away with the buckle now used and overcome the (liiliculties existing of the reins coming apart.
A further object of my invention is to provide a coupling which can be easily connected and one that will be securely held together.
Another object of my invention is to provide a coupling which can be manufactured at a very low cost.
With these objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of combination, construction and arrangement of parts, hercinafter fully described. and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification:Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device attached to the ends of the reins. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the female member in section, showing one of the jaws in dotted lines sprung out of the female member. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the female member. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the male member. .Fig. 5 is a side view of a modified form of the female member, and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which the part shown in Fig. 5, is formed.
Referring to the drawings A, indicates the female member and B, the male member of the coupling which members are adapted to be connected to the ends of the reins C and D. The female member A, is preferably formed of a metal plate A, having a slot A formed therein, adjacent one end in which the end of the rein C, is secured. An enlargement A is formed of the plate having recesses A, in its ends for the purpose hereinafter described. The female member can be formed as shown in Fig. 6, of a metal plate A having enlarged slotted ends adapted to be bent back upon itself so as to form a recessed end as clearly shown in Fig. 5. The male member B, comprises a loop and spring jaws, which member is preferably formed of a single piece of wire bent upon itself to form a loop B, in which the rein D, is secured. The members are then crossed and bent outwardly and inwardly towards each other forming the jaws B which are adapted to be sprung into the recesses in the female member. From the foregoing description it can be readily seen that the jaws can be readily sprung into or out of the recess of the female member as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A rein coupling comprising a female member formed of a plate having a recessed end, and having a slot formedin said plate to receive the end of one of the reins, and a male member formed of a single piece of wire bent into a loop to receive the end of the other rein, having outwardly extending jaws adapted to lit in the recessed end of the female member, for the purpose described.
2. In a rein coupling, the combination with a female member comprising a plate having an enlarged recessed end, and having a slot formed in said plate adapted to reccive the end of the rein, of a male member comprising a loop formed of a single piece of wire adapted to receive the end of the rein, and spring jaws formed by the end of the loop adapted to fit in the recessed end of the female member, for the purpose described.
3. In a rein coupling, the combination with a female .membcr comprising a plate having an enlarged recessed end and having a slot formed in said plate in which the end of a rein is adapted to be secured, of a male member comprising a single piece of wire bent upon itself to form a loop, then crossed and bent outwardly and inwardly toward each other forming jaws adapted to fit in the recesses in the enlarged end of the female the loop of the male member, for the purpose described.
