structing register-frames in two UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BARTHOLOMEW GOMMENGINGER AND CHARLES W. TROTTER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
REGISTER-FRAME.
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 87,560, dated March 9, 1869.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, BARTHOLOMEW GoM- MENGINGER and UHAS. W'. TROTTER, both of Rochester, county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Mode of Constructing a Register-Frame; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of our register-frame. Fig. 2 represents a front view of register-frame. Fig. 3 represents a hollow frame set in a wall. Fig. 4 represents a transverse section of register-frame.
The nature of our invention consists in conparts, one of which shall fit within the other so loosely as to be removable therefrom, thus adapting the frame for insertion in walls or partitions of various degrees of thickness; and it also consists in providing the outer part 'of the frame with numerous perforations, throughwhich air from the room in which it is placed may pass freely, and thus prevent the frame from becoming too highly heated.
To enable others skilled in the art to make or use our invention we will proceed to describe the construction aud operation of the same.
We constructour register-frame of iron, and in two parts, a and b. The separate parts a and b of register-frame are provided with flanges ff. Theflanges f f of front part a a are made to fit inside of corresponding flanges ff on rear part b b of register-frame, and
made to slide in each other, for the purpose of accommodating any thickness of wall or furriug. The front part our of register-frame has perforations e e e and gg g, as seen in drawing, Figs. 1 and 2, for the purpose of admitting and circulating cold air into the hollow airchamber A A. The cold air or hollow chamber A A surrounds the hot-air pipe 01,
and prevents the outside of register-frame from getting overheated, and therefore prevents the furring or woodwork which comes in contact with the register-frame from taking fire. It also prevents the plastering or paint surrounding the frame from getting yellow or disfigured. A number of serious fires have occurred by the overheating of the common register-frame. The rear part b b of the register-frame is set into the Wall with brick and mortar, as shown indrawing, Fig. 3, and the front part a a can be placed on at any time and secured to its place by a few screws.
Our register-frame can be used for side registers as well as for floors, and can be made of any shape or size.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A fire-proof and extension register-frame made in two parts, a and b, forming, when put together, a hollow air-chamber, A A, with perforations e e e and g g g, in the manner and for the purpose herein described and set forth.
