To all whom it 'may concern:

Be it known that I, PHOEBE R. COTTRELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at T igerton, in the county of Shawano, State of IiscOnsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can and other Vessel Cleaning Implements; and I do hereby declare the Vfollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention has reference to cleaning implements, and it aims to provide a simple device of that class including a cloth-holding member adapted to be readily inserted into the interior of a bottle or similar receptacle and rotated or otherwise moved about therein, the expansible nature of the cloth-holder causing it to accommodate itself to the interior of the receptacle, so as to contact with and perfectly clean every portion of the same during its movement therein.

The invention will be readily understood from the following detailed description, and its preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are designated by corresponding reference numerals in the several views.

Of the said drawings-Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved cleaning implement. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the device provided with a cloth and disposed in position in a bottle..

Referring more specifically to the drawings, the reference numeral 7 designates the cloth-engaging member of the implement, which, as shown, comprises a pair of oppo sitely-bowed resilient straps S, connected centrally together, as at 9, the in forming such means of connection exten ing likewise through a handle 10 disposed longitudinallyv of said straps and projecting some distance therebeyond.

The opposite ends of each strap are bent towards each other and serve as a means of support for a resilient strap 11 secured thereto in any preferred manner. The opposite ends of the straps 11 arev likewise bent inwardly to form the cloth-engaging shoulders 12, the free ends of which are serrated, as at 13.

The corresponding ends of the bowed straps 8 are held yieldingly apart from each other by means of springs 14, whose opposite ends are connected to such straps, the action of the springs rendering the entire cloth-engaging member of the implement expansible, in order to permit its contraction during its passage through the narrow or constricted neck of a can or bottle, and its subsequent expansion when in place in the interior of the latter.

In Fig. 4, the implement is shown in its operative position within the interior of a bottle, and it is to be noted that the cloth 17, carried by the serrated ends 13 of the straps 11, is held not only against the sides of the bottle but against its top and bottom, so that every portion of its interior surface will be thoroughly cleaned, the action of the springs 14 upon the straps 8 forcing the straps 11 outwardly in op osite directions against such surface and yie dingly retaining the same in such position.

Vhile the invention has been shown and described in connection with a can or bottle, it is to be understood that it is adapted to be used with equal readiness in cleaning lamp chimneys and similar articles open atboth ends.

Modifications and changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention, as it is not intended that the invention be limited to the exact details of con'- struction shown and described.

l/Vhat is claimed, is-

1. In an implement of the class described, a cloth holding body comprising a pair of oppositely disposed members connected centrally together, means disposed between the corresponding ends of said members for normally holding the same apart from each other, means provided upon opposite ends of said members for engaging a cloth, and a handle secured to said cloth-holding body.

2. In an implement of the class described, a cloth holding body comprising a pair of oppositely disposed members connected centrally together, springs disposed between the corresponding ends of said members for normally holding the same apart from each other, means provided upon opposite ends of said members for engaging a cloth, and a handle secured to said cloth-holding body.

3. In an implement of the class described, a cloth-holding member comprising a pair of oppositely bowed straps connected centrally together, a strap carried by each of said firstmentioned straps and provided at opposite ends with inwardly directed cloth-engaging portions, and a handle secured to said bowed members.

4. In an implement of the class described, a cloth-holding member comprising a pair of oppositely bowed straps connected centrally together, a strap carried by each of said firstmentioned straps and provided at opposite ends with inwardly directed cloth-engaging portions, resilient means disposed between the corresponding ends of said bowed members for holding the same yieldingly apart from each other, and a handle secured to said PHOEBE R.
