To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Menomonie, in the county of Dunn and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cork-Pullers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a cork remover or puller; and the primary object of the same is to provide a simple and eliective devicefor replacing an ordinary cork screw and having a positive operation.

One of the main advantages of the improved cork remover or puller is that it will break the seal or wax and pull the cork at the same time, especially on a small bottle. On a large bottle the seal may be broken by one extremity of the remover or puller which is sharpened. Wire sealing devices may also be readily broken or separated from the cork by the improved implement.

In the drawingFigure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a bottle showing the improved cork remover or puller applied thereto in operative position, the cork being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the remover or puller in inverted position relative to its mode of application.

The numeral 1 designates a shank having its one end sharpened as at 2, the shank 1 forming a handle for the manipulation of the remover or puller. The end of the remover or puller opposite that which is sharpened is formed with a head 3 having two outer tines 4 with pointed terminals 5 at an angle thereto. Extending from the head 3 between the tines 4 is an elongated spur 6. Above the tines 4 and spur 6, a fulcrum screw 7 is adjustably mounted in the head 3 to bear on the rim of the bottle neck.

In use the implement is applied as shown by Fig. 1, the tines 4 being held at a proper angle to permit the angular extremities 5 thereof to pass down between the cork and the neck of the bottle, and prior to the positioning of the extremities 5 of the tines between the cork and the neck of the bottle the spur 6 is first introduced between the cork and the neck and presses into the cork from the side. The head 3 is concavo-convex and when applied the convex surface is arranged uppermost as shown by Fig. 1 and a downward pressure is exerted on the shank or handle 1 to force the cork upwardly, the terminal of the screw during such operation being brought to bear on the rim of the bottle neck. This is the particular operation in removing or pulling a large cork. In using the implement in removing a small cork the tines and spur are inserted in the bottle neck and cork, as hereinbefore explained, and the bottle bodily turned while the implement is held in fixed position, or the cork turned by the implement while the bottleis held stationary. Either of these latter operations will loosen the cork sulriciently to permit it to be readily withdrawn. The implement is so constructed that when it is applied particularly to a small bottle the seal of the latter will be cut or broken. In removing the seal covering a large cork the sharpened end 2 will be utilized and the shank as well as the sharpened end will also be used for separating or breaking wire sealing devices. The screw 7 may be adjusted in the head 3 to accommodate corks of varying sizes or to increase and decrease the leverage.

An implement about the proportions illustrated may be practically used with corks of different sizes and for removing corks of extra large dimensions it will be understood that the proportions and dimensions of the implement may be increased accordingly. The implement is formed of metal exclusively and may be cheaply manufactured and sold at a small cost.

What I claim is A cork puller having a shank, one end of which is formed and adapted to engage a cork, and is provided with a threaded opening near the engaging end, and a screw extending through and engaged in said opening and positioned to rest with one end on the bottle neck to form an adjustable fulcrum piece for the puller.
