- Be it known that I, FRANK W-. Govn, a
citizen of the United States, residing at matic Regulators for Steam-Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in automatic regulators for steam supply pipes, leading from theboiler.
The object of my invention is to provide a regulator of this character which is placed upon thesteam supply pipe leading from the boiler intermediate the throttle valve and the steam gage, and in which the same is adapted to automatically 'cut 0d the supply of steam through said pipe when the steamis-at too high a pressure, and adapted to automatically open the supply pipe when the'steam pressure has lowered to its normal pressure.

The said dpiston rod extends within the cylinder a j acent the lower end and is provided with a piston 11 which is provided with circumferential rooves therein to receive the metallic paching 12 which forms a tight joint or connection with the 'inner face of the cylinder. Within the cylinder above piston and surrounding-the piston rod 10, 1s a coil spring 13 which has its u per its lower end bearing against the piston 12, thus normally holding the piston withinthe lower end of the cylinder. The tension of said spring upon the piston is increased or decreased by screwing the cylinder head up or down, thus requiring a eater steam pressurein the lower end of t e cylinder to move the piston upwardly.

The lever 16 is-bent laterally at inder is provided The said piston rod is provided at its upper end with a rigid arm 20 which extends inwardly and is provided with the outwardly extending pin 21 which passes within the bifurcated outer end 19 of the arm 16, and thus as the piston is moved up and down by the steam and spring, the turning plug 14 is oscillated and thesteam passing through the ipe is controlled.
'I e steam from the supply pipe 1 passes throughthe branch pipe 2 to the lower end of the cylinder. The set screw 17 is loosened so that the arm 16 is free to move without operating the turnin plug 14, and thus the piston within the cy inder is forced upward loo plug 14, and cuts off the steam by the pressure of the steam until the desired pressure is obtained, which does not as before stated, move the turning plug. When the desired pressure is obtained, the set screw 17 is tightened, thereby locking the arm 16 to the turning plug 14, and any increased pressure within the cylinder moves the piston upward and operates the turning of the pressure within the pipe or cylinder will cause the spring 13 to move the piston downward, and thus move the turning plug 14, andallow more steam to pass through the pipe 1, and thus it is readily seen that my device may be set at any desired pressure. Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device of the character described, comprisin a line of supply pipe vertically arrange a branch pipe connected thereto, a cap shaped member connected .to said branch pipe, a cylinder screwed within the upper end of the cap and in communication therewith, a turning plug in the pie line above the cylinder, a piston within te cylinder, a cylinder-head carried by the upper end of the cylinder and vertically adjust The falling ewgese able, a piston rod carried by the piston and extending through the cylinder-head, a coilspring surrounding the piston rod intermediate the cylinder-head and piston and normally exerting a downward pressure upon the piston, a bracket carried by the pipe line and surrounding the upper end of the cylinder and supporting the same, a sleeve surrounding the upper end of the piston-rod and rigidly secured thereto, an arm formed integral with the sleeve and extending inwardly towards the pipe line, a laterallyextending horizontally-arranged pin carried by the outer end of the arm, and a lever adjustably carried by the stem of the turning plug and extending inwardly and having a bent portion intermediateits ends to bring the outer end in a line with the arm carried by the piston, and the extreme outer end of the lever bifurcated and adapted to receive and retain the pin therein during the reciprocation of the piston-rod.
