FOLDING on coLLAPsrBLE EGG-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented nec. 17, 1907.
Application filed January l\ 1906. Serial No. 295,510. y
To all whomy it' may concern.'
Be it known that l, MICHAEL MILLER,- a citizen of the United States, residing at Brillion, in the county of Calumet and State of Wisconsin, have invented a Folding or Collapsible Egg-Case. l
This invention relates to improvements in collapsible cratesadapted primarily for carrying eggs or the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a convenient and economical structure capable of being folded in a small space for shipping purposes.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred t0 and particularly pointed out in the claims. i
ln the drawings-Figure 1 is a longitudinal' section' of my improved box. Fig. 2 is a plan view ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, showing the box folded. Fig. 4 is a lcross-section showing the box folded. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the box set up, the cover beingpartially broken away. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the box folded. Fig. 7
is a detail plan view of one of the'swingingv catches used' to lock the cover in place. Fig.
8 is a detail transverse section `of the box showing the application of a swinging catch.
The letter B, indicates a bottom board, having end cleats o, b, and side cleats c, c', the former extending upwardly more than the latter. End sections E E, are hinged to the end cleats b, b, as indicated at e, e, whereby the said ends may be folded inwardly. The edges of the sections E, E, a u-t against the upper edges of lthe end cleats, so that when said sections are .in their raised position they are limited in their outward movement.
Side 'sections S,- S, are hinged at P, P, to.
the side lcleats c, c, the edges of the said sections and cleatsabutting, for' the same pur- .pose described in connection with. the end sections and cleats. The olea-t c, extends upwardly beyond the 1plane of the top of the cleat c', to permit o sections in compact form as shown inFig. 3'.
The side sections are `provided with end flanges D, to engage the outer sides of the endsections when the box is erected for use, and
catches on saidside sections serve to lock the end and sidesections'together.
On the inner side of the side sections, just below the top edges thereof, are flanges C, C, 4vthe outer ends of-which abut against the inner sides of the end-sections, and .are sepathe foldingof the side' rated at a point near their centers to accommodate a partition H. A cover A, is supported on the flanges C, C, its top surface bemg slightly below the top edges ofthe side and end sections.
Several swinging catches K. are ivotally mounted on the top of the cover, a apted to lock the latter in osition. Each swinging catch comprises a odyT portion la, a finger piece-7i, and a hooked end lez, formed with a seal opening M. The hooked ends k2, o erate in slots j, formed in the side sections S), S, and engage pins L, extending across the slots. After the swinging catchesare locked in position seals are passed through the openings M, for obvious purposes. r
To fold the box, the-usual division strips tc. F, and G, are placed on the bottom B, to-
gether with the partition H, and cover A,
then the end `sections E, E, are folded inwardly, and ,side section S, on cleat c', is folded inwardly, and finally the companion side section S, is likewise folded, producing a neat' and compact structure. To erect the box, the end and side sections are turned up, the edge of the end sections being enga ed 'by the ends of the side sections andI the anges thereonand the catches R, hold the sections together. The cover A, is nowsu ported on the flanges and the' swinging catc esK.. are operated to engage the pins L.
Having thus described the invention; what iS claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. A folding box comprising a bottom havingend and side cleats, end sections hinged to the inner edges of the endcleats, side sections hinged to the inner edges of the side cleats, flanges on the inner surfaces near the i ends of the side sections, said yianges and the abutting edges of the end sections and endV cleats holding said end sections in vertical position, catches for securing the end and side sections together, horizontal flanges lo-l cated on the inner faces of theside sections below the top edges thereof, said nhorizontal flanges on each side section beingl spaced apart at their adjacent ends while t e opposite ends of said flanges fit against the inner faces of the end sections, a y artition fitting in the spacesv formed by the orizontal flanges andI resting on the bottom, a cover supported by the horizontal lflanges, the upper surface of said coverbeing below the upper edges of the, side endend sections, swinging catches 110 5 ing hinged end and side sections,
, seidv sections having slots and pins extending 10 cated below the top edges pivotedto the cover and adapted to pass through the slots and engage the pins therein to secure the cover in `place.
2. A folding box comprising a bottom havcertain of across said slots, meansbetween the end'and side sections for holding the sections .together, flanges on selected sections and loof the said sec- I tions, a cover supported on the flanges and fitting Within the side and end sections, swinging catches on the u per surface of the cover and below the top e gesl of the end and 'side sections to engage the slots vand the pins 15 MICHA L MILLER.
