UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES C. DORAN AND JAMESA. DORAN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 3. 1906- Serial No- 314,967.
States, and both residing at Providence,
in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawmg.
Our invention relates to im rovements in buttons of all kinds, and has or its object a construction which shall comprisea minimum of parts, be free of solder, and possess a maximum of strength and durability.
To these ends essentially our invention consists in the novel construction of the back plate with an eye integral therewith.
' In the drawings which constitute a part of this specification, Figures 1 and 2 are plan and central sections respectively of a button back blank. Figs. 3 and 4, like views respec-' tively of the blank after the cupping operation. Figs. 5 and 6, similar views respectively of the blank after the swaging of the cup and the piercing operation. Fig. 7, a side elevation of the completed back plate member. Fig. 8, a perspective view of the completed button, and Fig. 9, a central transverse section of the same on line x x of Fig. 8.
- Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
The button back comprises a back plate and an integral shank composed therefrom, said shank having a hollow base and a compressed solid adjacent portionhaving an opening, and a face plate with its marginal edge folded inwardly and downwardly over the edge of the back plate and firmly clamped thereto, all as more fully now to be described.-
In constructing our novel button, a blank piece of metal or other material, A, having a capacity for bending, islcut in a circular or other outline to conform with the ultimate shapeof the button, as shown in Fig. 1. By a plunger or other tool, the central portion of the blank, A, is cupped up as at B, in Fig.'
4. The sides of the cup are then by swaging dies or otherwise compressed or forced into contact with each other, forming a flattened post or shank, as shown at B in Fig. 6, which is practically solid. The post is transversely perforated as at b in Fig. 6. The
margins of the opening or eye, I), are rounded to prevent any edges for the thread to wear upon when the button is secured to the garment.
The face plate, C, of the button may be of any desired construction or material, and may be applied to the back plate in any manner. We prefer, however, to engage the parts by folding the margin of the front plate, C, inwardly and downwardly upon the rear face of the back plate, A, thereby avoiding the use-of solder here as was done in the formation of the eyeshank, B, upon the back plate. It will be noted that by this construction is avoided the weakening eflect Patented Dec. 10, 1907. i
upon the back plate and eye shank of the anthrough. I 2. A button back comprising a back plate having a shank integral therewith, said shank comprising a hollow substantially conical base and a flat upper portion pro vided with a transverse perforation.
3. A button back comprising a back late and a shank integral therewith, said s ank having a hollow base and a solid adjacent portion provided with a transverse perforation having a rounded margin.
4. A button back com rising a back plate and a shank integral t erewith and comressed therefrom, said shank having a holow base and a, compressed solid adjacent portion with an opening therein.
5. As an improved article of manufacture, a button composed of a back comprising a back plate with integral shank, said shank having a hollow substantially conical base and a compressed flattened solid adjacent portion provided with an opening, and a face plate having its marginal edge folded inwardly and downwardly over the edge of the back plate and fixedly clamped thereon.
In testimony whereof we have a'llixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
