CARL ADOLPH GEE NE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DRAWER-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1Q, 1907.
Application filed May 2,1907. Serial No. 371,459.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL ADoLPH GEI-INE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawer-Supports; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in 1 The object of the invention is to provide a support for drawers by means of which the same may be firmly supported in an open position and prevented from being pulled entirely out of their casing, means being provided whereby the drawers may be quickly and easily detached from the supporting device to permit the same to be entirely removed from the casing.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in certain novel features of construcT tion, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view through one end of a case of drawers showing the latter in end elevation with the supporting mechanism applied thereto, one of the drawers being shown in an 0 en position and the other in a closed position; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig-1; Fig. 4
and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
. Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1 denotes the drawers which are here shown as being arranged in a suitable casing 2. The supporting device comprises inner and outer vertically-disposed bars 3 and'4, the inner bar 3 being secured in any suitable j manner to the inner wall of the side of the casing adjacent to the front or open side of the casing, while the other bar 4 is secured to the end of the drawer adjacent to the outer l side of the same. Arranged between the l bars 3 and 4 and connected thereto are a series of lazy tong bars 5, the lower end of one j of the outer bars at each end of said lazy tongs is slidably connected to the lower ends of the bars 3 and 4 in slots 6 formed in said bars asshown, thus permitting the lazy tong bars to be readily folded together when the drawers are brought to a closed position.
The outer bar 4 is adapted to be secured permanently to the end of the drawer by means of screws or other fastening device, or the drawer may be detachably connected to the bar 4 to permit the drawer to be readily disengaged from the support, thus providing for the removal of the drawer from the casing.
The manner in which the drawer is detachably connected to the bar 4 is clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings and consists of an inwardly projecting upwardly turned hook 7 which is secured to and projects inwardly from the bar 4 and is adapted to be engaged with a slotted plate 8 secured to the outer end of the drawer as shown. The end of the drawer beneath the slot in the plate 8 is recessed and shown at 9 to permit the end of the hook to be inserted through the slot in the plate 8 and engaged with the upper edge of said slot thereby forming a support with which the outer end of the drawer is engaged. The ends of the drawer are, also recessed beneath the slot 6 in the lower ends of the bars 3 and 4 to permit the o eration of the heads of the bolts that slidably connect the lower ends of the outer lazy tong bars with-said bars 3 and 4.
Arranged on the inner side of the ends of the casing are guide or track strips 10 with which are adapted to be engaged a bearing roller 12 which is journaled in a bracket 13 secured to the end of the drawer adjacent to the rear side thereof and near the lower edge of the end piece whereby said rear end of the drawer is slidingly sup orted in the casing, thus permitting the rawer to be readily opened or closed. It will be understood that one of the lazy tong supporting devices is arranged on each end of the drawers and that said lazy tong support is disposed between the ends of the drawer and the adjacent sides or ends of the casing and that when the drawers are pushed into closed position, the lazy tongs will be folded together between the attaching bars 3 and 4 which are respectively secured to the side of the casing and to the adjacent end of the drawer.
By reversing the position of the bars 3 and 4, so that the slots 6 will be at the top, the lazy tong bars will be disposed adjacent to the lower'edge of the drawer, as will be un- 110 derstood. This arrangement may be found to be desirable in connection with letter files or other forms of drawers, in which the sides of the drawers are out away on their upper edges.
Having thus described 1n invention. what I claim as new is l. A drawer support comprising a series of lazy tong bars, inner and outer fastening bars connected to the opposite end of said lazy tong bars, fastening devices to rigidly connect the inner bar with the end of the drawer casing, a slotted connecting plate secured to the end of the drawer and a supporting hook arranged on said. outer bar and adapted to engage the said slotted plate of the drawers to detachably connect the latter with said outer bar, substantially as described.
2. A drawer support comprising a series of lazy tong bars, inner and outer fastening bars connected to the opposite end of said lazy tong bars, fastening devices to rigidly connect the inner bar with the end. of the drawer casing, a slotted connecting plate secured to the end of the drawer, a supporting hook arranged on said outer bar and adapted to engage the said slotted plate ol the drawers to detachably connect the latter with. said outer bar, guide or track strips arranged in the drawer casing, and guide rollers carried by the drawer to engage and travel on. said track bars, substantially as described.
In t StlUIODX whereol I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subseribing witnesses.
