To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY S. PAYNE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Wheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I .ocking Coat, Hat, and Umbrella Racks, of which the following is` a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hat, coat and umbrella racks, and the invention has for its primary object the provision of novel means for holding a hat, coat and umbrella whereby the same cannot be surreptitiously removed or stolen.

Another object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive rack that can be easily and quickly operated to grip or release a hat, coat and umbrella.

A further object of this invention is to provide a rack particularly adapted for clubs, restaurants, hotels and public places where hats, coats and umbrellas have heretofore been left in charge of a keeper.

With these and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of myimproved rack, Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the rack upon a smaller scale, the rack being illustrated in an open position in dotted lines, Fig. 4 is a vertlcal sectional view of the rack takeibon the line :1c-:1; of Fig. 2, illustrating the rack in an open or unlocked position, Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the rack in a closed or locked position, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a bracket used in connection with the rack.

To put my invention into practice, I construct my improved rack of a channel-shaped casing 1 having pierced side flanges 2 and closed top and bottom edges 3. The pierced side flanges 2 are employed in conjunction With screws or similar fastening means for retaining the rack upon the wall or similar support. The casing 1 is provided with outwardly extending supporting hooks 4 and 5,

i the hook 5 serving as a coat hook, while the hook 4 serves as a hat hook or rest. The side of the casing 1 is provided with a bracket 6 to support an umbrella, the handle of an umbrella being received in a notch in said bracket.

Transversely of the casing 1 is journaled a shaft 7 carr ying pins S extending through slots 9 formed in the casing 1. One of the pins 8 is provided with a hook-shaped clamp arm 10 adapted to contact with the end of the hook 4. The other pin is provided with a hookshaped clamp arm 11 adapted to lie over the hook 5 of the casing 1. The hook-shaped arm 11 carries a right angular extension 12 adapted to engage the bracket 6 of the casing 1 and retain an umbrellain said bracket. The hook-shaped arms 10 and 11 are adapted to engage a hat and coat mounted upon their respective hooks.

The shaft 7 is provided with a lug 14 and to lock said shaft in a 'fixed position, I employ locking bolt 15 having a reverse C-shaped head 16, said head carrying a ward 17 adapted to engage the lug 14 and prevent the rotation of the shaft 7. The locking bolt 15 is movably mounted in a keeper 1S carried by the casing 1, and within said strap is located a coil spring 19 adapted to normally hold the locking bolt in an elevated position.

To depress the locking bolt 15 and release the shaft 7, whereby it may be partially rotated to raise the arms 10 and 11, I employ a key 20, said key having a hollow shank 21 adapted to fit over a pin 22, carried by the head 16 of the locking bolt 15. The top 3 of the casing adjacent to the pin 22 is provided with a beveled ward 23, the blade 24 of the key engaging said beveled ward, when the key is rotated, whereby said key and locking bolt will be depressed to release the ward 17 from the lug 111.

It is obvious that the shaft 7 may be provided with numcrous arms adapted to engage numerous hooks carried by the casing whereby a plurality of articles, not herein mentioned, can be locked in engagement with my improved rack.

Such changes in the size, and minor details of construction, as are permissible by the appended claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isz- In combination with a vertically-extend? ing supporting casing, a notched bracket secured to one side thereof, a shaft journaled in said casing at a point between the center and the top and having a ward arranged approximatelycentrally thereof, said shaft further provided with a pair of pins extending laterally through the casing and arranged at a point at each side of the ward, supporting ooks secured to the front of the casing and extending forwardly therefrom, a clamping arm carried by one of said pins and adapted to engage with one of said hooks, a clamping arm carried by the other of said pins and adapted to engage the other of said hooks and provided with a lateral extension adapted to engage said notched bracket, a keeper carried by the front wall of the casing and projecting inwardly therefrom, a spring arranged in the keeper, a locking bolt extendcontrolled by said spring, areversed C-shaped' member formed integral with the upper end of the bolt spanning the said shaft and having a ward adapted to be engaged by the ward of the shaft, a pin projecting from the upper end of said head, and a ward depending from the top ward of the casing adjacent said pin, said pin receiving a key and said depending ward coaoting with a ward on said key to depress said locking bolt thereby releasing the shaft.
