DUMP-WAGON.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WiLLLiM ATKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dump-W agons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of dumpwagons in which the bottom of the wagon box consists of hinged dropdoois adapted to swing downwardly to dump the load, and to be again'raised to make a closed bottom for the box, and my object is to support the doors in such a manner that they will easily clear the load after it has been dumped, and without strain upon any of the parts.
Referring to the drawings in which similar letters mark similar parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a side elevation in part section of my improved dump-wagon. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the wagon body, and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of Fig. 2.
The front and rear wheels and axles are indicated in dotted lines.
The wagon-body A is hopper shaped, the sides being vertical and the front and rear ends inclined. The bottom is divided laterally the wagonbody, and consists of two drop-doors or sections B, B, hinged to swing forwardly and rearwardly when the mechanism is released. which holds them closed. It is obvious that severe strain and injury would result to the drop-doors B, B, particularly the latter, if no provision was made for removing them from con tact with the dumped load. I therefore construct the hinges by which the drop-doors B, B are secured to the body A, in a distinctive manner; elbow-shaped arms a, a, formed preferably of angle iron, bent to fit snugly the under side of the dropdoors, and the front and rear ends of the wagon-body, and are bolted in their lower portions to bars I), I) disposed longitudinally and projecting for a portion of their length forward and rearward of the wagon-body. The inner ends of the elbow-shaped arms a, a are pivotally secured to hinge-bars c, c rigidly bolted to the drop-doors B, B respectively; the upper ends of the rms a, a are connected by bolts (1 which pass through guides (2 on the front and rear of the wagon-body, and resting on the lower end of the guides form pivotal points upon which the drop-doors B, B swing; braces f, f are connected to the outer ends of the bars I), b and the upper ends of the elbow shaped arms a, a to give rigidity to the structure and to offset any do\\'n\\"ardly bending strain on the elbow shaped arms a, a.
To raise and retain the bottom sections B, B in position I employ a single chain 0 which is secured to a drum D and passes rearward over an idlerpulley on the inner side of the upper and forward portion of the wagon-body A, thence through a slot 71 and over an idler pulley 71 on the outer side of the wagon-body, to a pulley i from which it passes to a pulley secured to the drop-door B, over which it travels to a similar pulley it on the wagon-body A, then downward and through guides Z, Z, secured to the under side of the drop-deer B, then up to and over a pulley /r on the opposite side of the wagonbcdy A to a pulley j on the drop-door B, then over a pulley t" to an idler-pulley 7L2 and through a slot 71 and over an filler-pulley g to the drum 1) where it is again fastened. In practice 1 find a single chain much preferable to the separate chain, one on each side of the wagon-body; the lifting power is more evenly distributed, and stretching compensated for.
The drum D revolves upon a shaft l" journalcd in forward extensions of the wagonbody A, and is provided with a ratchet wheel 0 and a lever movably mounted on the shaft of the drum 1); a hooked pawl F is pivoted on the lever B and engages with a link G which is pivoted on the bolt passing through a slot i into the wagon-body; the lower end of the link G is connected to a dog 7' pivoted on a bracket 7r secured to the wagon-body A, and engages with the ratchet wheel 0 holding the drum 1) against rearward movement. To unwind the chain C and allow the doors B, B to drop when it is desired to drop the load with which the wagon may be filled, the lever E is pushed forward, carrying with it the upper end of the link G by reason of its engagement with the hooked pawl F and rocking the link G to disengage the dog from the ratchet wheel 0, the drop-doors B, B will immediately be released by the unwinding of the chain (l and the load will be deposited in the spot desired. hen the wagon is drawn forward after the load has been dropped, the drop-door B in contact with the dumped material is gradually raised on its pivot in the guides c to a sullicient height to clear the top of the dump, a short chain 9 attached to the rear end of the drop-door B and the bars 11 serves to check the tendency of the drop-door B to fall too far forward after its rise in the guides e.
The forward drop-door B is automatically raised in the guides e by a chain H which is secured to the under side of the door and passes forward. and over an idler-pulley I to' the drum D on which it winds as the chain C unwlnds, so that both doors are practically raised to clear the dumped load, whether the wagon be moved ahead or backed, the dotted lines illustrating the different positions of the drop-doors B, B; as the wagon is drawn clear of the load the dropdoor B will move down in its guides 6 until it rests there- 1n on its pivotal hinged connection, when both drop-doors can be raised and closed by throwing over the hooked pawl F into engagement with the ratchet wheel 0, and operating the lever E to wind the chain C on the drum D, at the same time unwinding the chain H, until both drop-doors are raised to then normal closed position, the dog j checkng a rearward movement of the drum D by lts engagement with the ratchet wheel 0; after the drop-doors are raised the hooked pawl F is again thrown over to catch the upper end of the link G, which compels the engagement of the dog 7' with the ratchet wheel 0 by the action of the spring 0.
By the construction of my dump wagon substantially as shown and described, I add to the strength of wagons of this class and increase their durability and efliciency.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l 1. In a clump-wagon, a wagon-body havmg bottom drop-doors, mechanism to raise sald doors comprising a drum journaled on the wagon-body, a ratchet wheel on the drum, a dog to engage therewith, a pivoted link connected to said dog, a lever, and a hooked pawl to engage thelink.
2. In a dump-wagon, a wagon-body havmg bottom drop-doors, mechanism to raise said doors comprising a drum journaled on the wagon-body, a ratchet wheel 011 the drum, a dog to engage therewith, a pivoted link connected to said dog, a spring attached to the wagon-body and the link, a lever, and a hooked pawl on the lever to engage the link.
3. In a dump wagon, a wagon body, a drop door for said body, elbow shaped arms having the portion on one side of said elbow secured to said door, straight bars secured to said elbow arms and extending beyond the said door, and braces connecting the unsecured ends of said bars, substantially as do scribed.
4. In a dump wagon, a wagon body, a drop door for said body, elbow shaped arms having the portion on one side of the elbow secured to the door with the other part projecting beyond the door, straight bars secured to said elbow arms and extending beyond said door, braces connecting the unsecured ends of said bars and a guide on the wagon body, said construction including means at the point of the iunction of the braces and elbow shaped arms for engaging said guides, substantially as described.
5. In a dump-wagon, a wagon-body having a bottom (1 opdoor, hinged connections between the wagon-body and drop-door com prising elbow shaped arms, bars projecting beyond the wagon-body and to which the elbow shaped arms are bolted, and braces between said bars and the upper end of the elbow shaped arms.
6. In a dump-wagon, a wagon-body having bottom drop-doors, a single chain passing through guides on the bottom of one of the drop-doors, over pulleys on the lower part of both sides of the wagon-body, under pulleys on both sides of the other drop-door, to and over pulleys on both sides of the upper part of the wagon-body, over pulleys on both sides of the forward. part of the wagon-body, and through slots in the sides of the fo ward part of the wagon-body, to and over pulleys on the inner side of both sides of the wagonbody to the drum to which it is secured.
7. In a dump wagon, a wagon body, a drop door for said body, supporting means for said doors including elbow shaped arms having one end of the same pivotally secured to said door, and a brace construction for the outer end of said elbow arms, substantially as described.
