To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, \Yintmat FREEDMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Combined Bookcase and Folding Bed, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention has in view the provision of a bookase having a compartment formed at the rear thereof in which is adapted to be contained when in folded relation, a bed of novel construction. The book-case is revolubly mounted, whereby it may be easily reversed to bring either the bed or the front of the case to accessible position. i

Figure 1 is a central, vertical, cross section through the bookcase with the bed extended; Fig 2 is a fragmentary, perspective view on an enlarged scale, of the intermediate portion of the bed, showing the manner in which the two sections thereof are pivotally connected together, and Fig. I) is a partial cross section of the bed substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

The invention as preferably carried out in practice includes a book-case l, of the usual or other dcsired construction, with shelves 2 at the front, and of suili 'cient height to provide a compartment 3 at its rear,

for containing a bed l when the latter is foldedly disposed therein. Above the compartment 3 the bookcase is also provided with a locker i", the latter being accessible when the bed is turned to the front.

The bookcase is supported on a pedestal 5, which receives in its upper end the stem of a bearing plate 6, the latter being screwed or otherwise attached to the bottom of the book-case. Stability of the bookcase is insured by a box-base 7, the top of which is slightly spaced from the bottom of the book-case as clearly shown in Fig. l, in order that the, latter may freely revolve on the pedestal but will be prevented from tipping to either side to any extent. .Both the 'pedestal and the base 7 are supported on casters which obviously admit of the entire structure being easily moved about.

The bed 4 is swingingly connected to the book-case near the bottom outer edge of the compartment 3, on a pivot-bar 8, and is composed of two sections, an inner section 9 and an outer section 10, the frames of said sections, which are preferably constructed of angle-iron as shown in Figs. 2 and being pivot-ally connected'together at each side of the bed by links 1], the latter being of such length that the outer section may be folded on top of the inner section, as illustrated indotted outline in Fig. l, with the two Specification of Letters Patent.

sections of a mattress l2 placed thereon, the said I sections of the mattress being connected by a web at the top only.

Both the inner and outer sections 9 and ]O of the bed are provided with legs 13, which are pivotally suspended at each side of the frame, the leg at each side of each section being composed of side-bars, preferably four in number, all of which are rigidly connected together at their free ends by a foot-bar 14. A stop 15, pivotally attached to each side of the frame of each section, is adapted to be swung in the path of the two intermediate and adjacent side bars, and prevent the further outward movement of the legs when brought to the position illustrated in Fig. 3. In this position the legs flare outwardly slightly at the bottom, which insures the stability of the bed when extended.

When the bed is folded, the outer section is revolved until it is seated on top of the inner section and the legs l3 of this section folded inwardly The two sections are then bodily lifted and swung about the pivot bar 8 as a center, when the legs of the section 9 may also be folded inwardly and the entire structure placed within the compartment 3, the steps 15 being reversed on their pivots to carry them to a removed position. The bed is retained in the compartment 3 by a button 16 pivotally attached to the door of the locker 4.

The under side of the inner section 9 may, if desired, be provided with paneling, a mirror or other ornamental facing, which will form the outer wall of the compartment 3 when the bed is folded therein and thus obscure the nature of the construction.

It is apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, that numerous changes in the construction from that shown and hereinbefore described, may be resorted to within the scope of my invention as defined in the claims annexed.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

4. A folding bed composed of two sections, foldable one upon the other, and legs pivotally attached to the opposite sides of each section, foldable thereunder transversely of the bed.

5. An article of furniture comprising a pedestal, a body revolubly mounted on said pedestal having a compartment, a bed foldable within said compartment, and a box-base disconnected from both the pedestal and body and surrounding and inclosing the pedestal.

6. A folding bed composed of two sections foldable one upon the other, legs pivotally attached to the opposite sides of each section and foldable thereunder transversely of the bed, each leg being composed of side-bars connected together at their free ends by a foot-bar, and stops movable into the path of the side-bars of the legs to limit the outward movement thereof. 7
