JOHN W. WHITING AND CHARLES E. WHITTEMORE, OF BAY CITY,
' MICHIGAN.
Letters Patent No. 86,891-, dated `Februar/ry 9, 1869.
11i/[PROVEMENI. IN CHIMNEY-COW'LS.
To whom it' ma/y concern:
Be it known that we, JoHNj W. WHrrING and CHARLES E. WHHTEMORE, of Bay Gity, in the Vcounty of Bay, and .State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chimney-Caps and `Ventilators; and We do declare thatthe following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being vhad to the accompanying drawings, audrto the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this speciiication, in whieh-P Figure l is a perspective View, and Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view. The nature of our invention consists in so constructing a metallic chimney-cap, provided with proper apex`- tures in its sides, covered by suitable self-acting doors or gates, coupled together in pairs, that the larger, or smoke-exits will be closed, and the smaller, or draught apertures be opened, on the Windward side, while the smoke-aperture on the leeward side shall be opened, andthe draught-aperture closed, for the purpose of creating an upward draught in chimney at all times, preventing the nuisance known as a smoky chimney, and serving equally as well as a ventilator.
lo enable others skilled in the art to construct and use our invention, we now proceed to describe the same, and name its various parts.
A are the side walls of our chimney-cap, constructed of galvanized iron, or other suitable sheet-metal, of the proper dimensions and shape4 to embrace the top of the chimney upon which it is to be used.
B are large rectangular openings in. the side walls d A, for the exit'f the smoke.
C are two or more smaller openings, underneath and parallel with the large openings B, for allowing a draught of air to enter the cap. A
The total area ofthe draught-apertures C, on any one side, should equal one-fifth of' the area of the larger opening B above them.
D are doors,'hinged. horizontally to the side walls A, at a point between the upper and lower openings,v
by means of the hinges E, and each of a size sufficient to cover all 'the openings on one side. That portion of the doors below the hinges E is bent outward, at
an angle of about forty degrees.
On the inner faces of the doors D are secured the staples E, at a point central with reference -to the openings`B-. A metallic rod, G, equal in length to the distance'fromone of the side walls A to the opposite one, is thenhookd at each end into the staple AF, on
opposite doors, in such manner that when one of thev openings, B, is closed by the pressure ofthe wind against its door, the opposite door is opened by the coupling-rod G, by which they are connected, and the smoke escapes through the opening B, on the leeward side, assisted by a draught of air entering the cap through'the apertures C on the Windward side. f
Its advantages as a ventilator will readily be perceived.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is-
The doors D, vwhen provided with an outwardly-bent part, below the hinges, on which they are pivoted, in such a manner as to form lower openings C, which are shut when the upper openings B are opened, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.`
