FORMING-DIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN S. Annnncn'r, a' citizen of the United States of America, residing at city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Forming-1)ies, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a forming die for use in flaring sheet metal bodies to render them of bell-shape or other flaring shapes.
Figure I is atop'or plan View of my forming die. Fig. II is a vertical longitudinal section taken on line IIII, Fig. I. Fig. III is an end elevation of the female portion of the die. Fig. IV is a vertical cross section taken on line IV-IV, Fig. I. Fig. V is an elevation of the upper part of the post and locking key, and a fragment of the upper section of the female die. Fig. VI is in part'a vertical longitudinal section taken through a modification of the female portion of the die and in part an elevation of the male portion of the die. Fig. VII is a vertical cross section taken on line VII-VII, Fig. VI. cation with the upper section of the female portion of the die partly broken out to afford a view of the lower section of said die. Fig. IX is a vertical longitudinal section taken on line IX-IX, Fig. VIII. Fig. X is an end elevation of the female portion of the die illustrated in Figs. VIII and IX.
In the accompanying drawings: 1 designates the bed of my die upon which is mounted a pair of guides 2 that extend longitudinally of said bed. i
A designates the female portion of the die which comprises a lower section 3 that is secured to the bed 1 by bolts or other suitable means and an upper section 4 that is hinged at 5 to the lower section. The' sections of the female die portion are provided with channels 3 and 4 adapted to register with each other when said die portion is closed, thereby producing a circular opening that extends through said die portion. At one end of each of the sections 3 and 4, the channels therein are continued in an outward direction so that said channels terminate to produce a flaring or bell-shape face at the end of said die portion.
6 is a post extending upwardly from the lower section 3 of the female die portion and which is permitted to enter into the upper section 4, due to said upper section being notched, as seen in Figs. I, IV, and V. The post 6 is slotted near'its upper end to receive a key 7 that, when inserted through the post, serves to hold the-upper section 4 to the lower section 3, when the female portion of the die is in a closed condition.
8 is a handle projecting from the upper section 4 by i Fig. VIII is a top or plan View of another ruodiii-' adapted to operate upon the bed 1 between the guides 2 and which is provided with a conical or boll-shape nose [0, adapted to be moved into a position within the female portion of the die. The male member of the die may be moved forwardly and backwardly relative to the female portion of the die by the application of power thereto in any suitable manner.
11 d csignates a resistance block that is mounted upon the bed 1, adjacent to the end of the female portion of the die opposite to that which faces the male member of the die. This resistance block contains a pocket 12 and it is provided at the rear of said pocket with a flange 13 containing a screw thrcaded bore.
14 is a screw rod mounted in the flange 13 and having fixed to its forward end, above the rcsi stance block 1], a head 15.
16 is a jam nut on the screw rod that is located at'thc rear of the flange 13.
In the practical use of my forming die, a piece of metal such as a tubc, as seen at X Figs. I to IV inclusive, is introduced into the female portion of the die while said die portion is in an open condition, due to the upper section of said portion having been elevated. The screw rod 14 isthen manipulated to a suflicicnt degree to cause the forward end of the piece of metal that has been laid in the female die portion to bc projeiaed to the desired degree beyond the end of the female die portion that faces the male die member. The jam nut 16 is then set to the rear face of the flange of the resistance block 11 and the screw rod 14 is held from movement in order that the head 15 on the screw rod may serve as a non-yielding resistance member for the piece of metal that is to be operated'upon in the die. The male member of the die is then moved rcarwardly toward the female portion of the die and its tapered nose by entering into engagement with a piece of metal to be operated upon, causes the portion of said piece of metal that is engaged by said nose to be spread or flared outwardly into the flared cavitypresent at the ends of the sections of the female die portion.
In the modification shown in Figs. VI and VII, 3 and 4 designate respectively the lower and upper sections of thefemale die portion and 9 the male die member. having a tapering nose 10". The sections of the female die portion contain channels of similar shape to those previously described. 17 are bushing plates that are detachably connected to the sections of the female die portion and which are shaped correspondingly to the channels in said sections. 1 These bushing plates are removably'attached to the die sections byscrews or other suitable means and they serve as a medium for decreasing the size of. the openingin which the pi see of metal is formed. The bushing plates being detachable plates of varied thickness, may be employed at different time, thereby providing for the operation of the die in flaring pieces of sheet metal of various sizes.
