anni l EDWARD P, CURTISS AND HoMER RENDRE, or BUFFALO, NRW YORK.
.Letras Patent Naseem, dated .mmm-y 9, i869 IMPROVED MODI: or Icous'.riatrornvca BED-LQUNGES.
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that we, EDWARD P. CURTISS and Ho- MER H. HENDEE, have invented a new and improved Mode of Constructing Bed-Lounges; and we do hereby declare that the following is a true and'exact `description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Qur'improvements relate ,to lthat class of bed-lounges which fold together, so as to present the appearance, and be used for the ordinary purposes lof a lounge dur ing the day, and unfold when required at night, to form. a bed of double the width of the lounge.
The invention consistsin hinging the lounge-back same side of the loungeframe, When the, hinge of the back is located sufeently belowthat of -the seat to enable it to rest by its upper edge upon the floor, and support the unfolding part ofthe seat in the same plauewith the stationary part thereof.
In the drawings- Figure I is a vertical longitudinal section of ourixn-` proved article of furniture, when folded together as a ounge. Figure 1I is a rear view of the same, with the back removed. Figure III is arcroSs-section of the lounge, with thesame shown in red lines unfolded, forming a bed. Figure IV is a perspective view of the head-portion of the bed. v Like letters refer to like parts in each of the figures. A is the rback of the lounge, hinged at i to the lower or main portion -E ofthe frame, as shown, (Fig. III.) B isthe stationaryportion of the arm'of the lounge,
which is attached to the frame E.
D is the" upper and movable portion of the frame, hinged at the backside to the main frame, as shown at x x, Fig. II; and
Q, the corresponding portion of the arm, which is hinged to the frame D 'at e e.
The stationary portion of the bed, within the frame E, is provided with spiral springs '/m. m, which rest` on the bottom slats L L. p l
` The upper portion of the seat, or the .hinged portion ofthe bed within the frame D, is provided with spiral springs N N, ofthe form showinwhich are inserted in pieces 0fwebbing, K K, soas to project equally on each side, and'be in the same relative position as the lower springs m.. `This webbing is secured at the ends to the frame, i`n any suitable manner.
P P represent any suitable material for coveringthe springs, on both sides of the upper portion and the top of the lower portion of the seat orbed.
When used for a lounge, the two portions ofthe frame may be Secured together by boltsor catches, as shown lat a, a. i The portion A, when employed as a backfor the lounge, is secured in placeby t'\vo,iiiooks, one connecting With the arm at thev head, andthe other with the frame at the foot, though' any other suitable means for the purpose may be employed. v lThe operation of our improvements is as follows: Arranged as a lounge, each pair of the springs mN, being one above the other, forms, in eiect, but a single spring, and is of great elasticity, possessing double 'that of a single Spring. The webbing K Vsecures the springs N in place, and at the. same time yields sufficiently to permit the free action of the whole spring, whether used on the lounge or for the bed. To convert the lounge into a bed, the back, A, is first let down, (shown in red lines, Fig. IIL) when the upper portions C D of the arm and frameare released and turned back, the latter resting on the back, A, and the arm O arranged (which its hinges e permit) so as to form an extension of the stationary part B ofthe arm, any suitable stop, s s, being' employed to retain the former in its proper inclined position, in line with the latter.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters'Patent, is-
Hinging the lounge-back A upon the same side with 'the unfolding part D of the seat, and below thel same,
so as to operate substantially as herein setforth.
