Description

No, 867,109. P'ATENTED SEPT. 24, 1907.
G.P.GATHREA. DISPLAY FRAME.
APILIGATION FILED MAY 23. 1907- WITNESSES: INVENTOR Gemye I. Oath/ma l ATTORNEY;
GEORGE P. CATHREA, OF VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
DISPLAY-FRAME Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1907.
Application filed May 28,1907. Serial No. 375,231.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that LGnonen P. GATHREA, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Display- Frames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a display frame designed as a removable attachment to .a box containing certain goods such as biscuits in order to exhibit a sample of the contents of the box and enable a customer to make selection accordingly.
In the retail trade althoughthe name and description of certain biscuits may be announced on the label or cover of the box containing them, this method does not always convey to a customer the information required as well as when a selected sample is displayed. The advisability of such display is at present generally admitted and is frequently met by providing a glass front or window to the box itself or by providing an independent display case of samples where the biscuits are shown under their respective names. Various objections can be urged against these methods which my invention is purposed to overcome.
The device is fully described in the following specification reference being made to the drawings by which it is accompanied, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the display frame in position on a tin box, Fig. 2, a horizontal sec tion through the frame showing the means by which the back is adjustably and removably secured, and, Fig. 3, a similar view showing an alternative means for reamovably securing the display frame to a box.
The display frame consists of a light rectangular frame 2 of tin or other suitable material in the front of which is placed or secured a glass 3. In two or more of the opposite sides of the frame 2 are cut clip members 4 which may be bent inward to adjustably retain in place a backing 5 between which and the glass front 3 the biscuits or other goods which it may bedesired to display are placed, and these securing clips 4 may be folded against the backing a greater or less amount to suit the thickness of the biscuit or other article or may be bent back altogether when it is desired to change or renew the samples. This display frame may be removably secured to the box containing the goods in any suitable manner. That shown in Fig. 1 is purposed to be used on boxes for import trade where the empty boxes are returned to the factory to be refilled, and it is not advisable to puncture them. In this application of the device two. stout wires 8 are secured to the upper side of the display frame and are bent over as shown to hang onto the upper edge of the box under the lid and the bent over ends are carried down far enough to preclude the possibility of their becoming detached accidentally when the lid is removed. These wires are sufficiently rigid to hold the display frame close against the front face of the box.
Where the boxes are not expected to be returned to the factory as for export trade I prefer to use a fastening such as is illustrated in Fig. 3 where on each opposite side of the frame 2 members 9 are left which may be inserted through slits cut with a knife in the tin of the w front side of the box near to the top edge and thereafter bent over as shown to secure the frame.
It is anticipated that manufacturers or wholesale dealers will furnish retailers with display frames of this character for each variety of goods supplied which will be attached to the box having the corresponding goods, and which when'that box is empty can be removed to a fresh one; or a certain number of the display frames will be furnished and the retailer can himself charge them with any sample he desires to exhibit, and attach each to the box from which the sample was taken.
Having now particularly described my invention and the manner of its use, I hereby declare that what I claim as new and desire to be protected in by Letters Patent is:
1. A display device comprising a light open frame having a glass front, a backing adjustably secured within such frame by clips folded inward on the backing. from the sides of the open frame, and means for removably securing the frame to a box.
2. A display device comprising a light open frame, a glass front, a backing adjustahly secured within such frame by clips on the sides of the openframe and folded inward on the backing, and means for removably securing; the same to a box such means comprising wires secured to the top of the open frame and doubledover to hook on the upper edge of the box to which the display device is to be secured.
3. A display device comprising a light open frame, a glass front, a backing adjustably secured within the frame, and means for removably securing the frame to a box such means comprising portions of the sides of the frame backwardly projecting from it and adapted to be passed through slits cut in the box through which the backwardly projecting portions maybe passed and bent to retain them therein.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
