To all whom 'it may concern: l

Be it known that I, ORCEAL KENNEY, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Longbeach, in the county oi Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dressmakers Skirt- Gages, of which the following is a specification.

rlhis invention relates to means for accurately gaging the length of a skirt from the floor when secured to a person; and an object thereof is to provide a device that is simple in construction and by means of which the length of a skirt may be accurately obtained.

A iurther obj ect is to provide a device that is readily adjusted and that can be folded up when not in use.

I accomplish these objects by means of the device described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure I-is a perspective view of my device in operative position. Fig. 2-is a detail of one of the adjusting clamps.

Referring to the drawings 5 indicates suitable base plates preferably constructed of wood and rectangular in configuration. Rigidly secured to each of these base plates and extending upwardly in a vertical direction `is a cylindrical standard 6 which has a graduated scale marked thereon. These standards preferably extend at least two feet above the base plate and if desired they could be made foldable by means of hinges (not shown).

Slidably mounted on each of these rods is a collar 7 preferably ot metal that may be securedto the standards at any desired point by means of thumb screws 8. Each of these collars is provided with lips 9 to which is secured by means of rivets the ends of a rigid metallic bar IO, upon which may be marked a series of graduations preferably to the inch scale. By means of the graduated scale on the metallic bar the spacing of buttons and the location of ornaments may be accurately obtained: lhis bar is provided in its center with a hinge Il by means of which it can be folded to pass partly around the skirt which is being measured and touch the same at more than one point so as to facilitate the measuring. This hinge also serves to render the bar of convenient size for transportation. I

The operation ot the device is as follows: After the skirt has been hung from the waist of a person and it is desired to gage its length, the collars 7 having the metallic bar I0 secured thereto are secured to standards G by means oi thumb screws S the desired distance from the Hoor. The person on whom the dress is bein g hung then stands close to the device as is illustrated in the drawing, and the operator then marks on the skirt along the upper portion oi the bar l0 by means of pins or tailors chalk the indicated distance, the person turning from time to time until the operation is fully completed.

It will be noted from the foregoing description that I have provided a simple and eflcient device by means of which the length oi a skirt is conveniently and accurately obtained. c

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-

l. As an article ot manufacture, a portable dressmakers' skirt consisting of a pair of standards having a graduated scale marked thereon, bases for which these standards are erected` collars adju ably secured to the standards and a rigid metallic bar secured to the collars and constituting' the solo means of connection between the two standards.

A device of the class described, comprising two hase plates cach provided with vertical cylindrical standards, said standards having' each a graduated scale marked thereon; adjustable collars slidably mounted upon said stanc'lurds; and a hinged bar With a graduated scale marked thereon secured to said collars.

I. A skirt gage, comprising two base plates a standard on each of said base plates and having graduations thereon: `collars slidably mounted on said standards; means on the collars to secure them at any point on the standards a bar secured to said collars and having graduations thereon; and a hinge near the center of said bar dividing said bar into two parts adapted to fold on each other.
