Description
atent l @frn g JOHN P. JUBB, or NAMAHA, MICHIGAN;
Lette/rs Patent' No. 86,412, dated Fcbrua/y 2, 1869. i
IMPROVEMENT IIAN BELT-PUNCH. Q-*ym The Schedule referred to in these LettersPatent and making of the lame.
To all whom t rrml/y concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN P. JUBB,1'' Namaha, iii the county of Delta, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Belt-Punches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in punches for punching belts and other similar articles, the object of which is to provide a con vcnient arrangement whereby the punching may be effected by the blor of a hammer, delivered upon a solid punch, which is also applicable i'or punching out old rivets.
Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved apparatus, partly broken away, and
Figure 2 represents a front elevation of the same.
Similar'lettcrs of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the stand supporting thc die B, over which the article to be punched is placed.
It is also provided with a bent arm, G, supporting the spindle D of the punch D in a vertical position, coincident with the hole in the die.
The said spindle is arranged to slide in its support, and is provided with a lever, E, pivoted to the arm G, for raising the punch out of the hole formed in the article being punched.
A bifurcated guard or jaw, G, is arranged a short distance above the die, to arrest the movement ofthe belt or ther article being punched, when the punch is raised up by the said lever, and force' lthe same from the punch.
As it is preferable to allow the punch to rest on the article to be punched, before the blow isstruck, a spring, H, is arranged, under the lever E, to throw the end connected with the punch down, and allow the punch to fall. The upper end of the spindle is enlarged to withstand the blows which are struck by hammers or mallets to punch the holes.
The dieand punch are adjustably attached, respectively, to the bed A and the spindle, to admit of attaching or removing`them readily.
My improved punch is very useful for punching out old rivets, such as are employed with a Washer at each end for securing belts. By removing the die, and placing the belt on the bed A, with the washer ou the lower' side, over the hole in which the die lits, and forcing the punch down upon the upper end of the rivet, the latter may be readily forced through the washer on the upper side, without tearing the leather.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The bed A, supporting thedie B, the arm C, punchspindle D, spring-leverE, and jaw G, all constructed, arranged, and combined substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN P. JUBB. Witnesses:
G. J. SUTTER, P. H. WITT.
