To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLEs F. AsPLUND, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county oi Hennepin and State O Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holding Devices, oi which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to bag holding devices of the type designed for supporting the bags in open position while being filled, and embodies a pair of relatively movable members orbars provided with sack engaging portions or arms over which the mouth oi the sack is arranged in distended condition.

The invention has ior its Objects to provide :a comparatively simple, inexpensive device of this character which will be exceedingly strong and durable, one wherein the members may be readily adjusted to accord with the size of the bag and one wherein the bag holding members will be quickly and securely locked in supporting position.

With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel Vfeatures oi construction and combination ot parts more fully hereinaiter described.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a iront elevation of a bag holding device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail section on an enlarged scale taken on the line 2 2 oi Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical, detail sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and showing the parts o n an enlarged scale. Fig. 4 is a detail, sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the device embodies a hanger member or head 1 oi substantially elliptical form, as shown, and provided with periorations or the reception oi fastening members 2 by means of which the hanger may be attached to a wall or other support 3, the head 1 being bent between its ends to provide offset portions 4 which are spaced from the support 3 when the head is applied thereto, as seen more clearly in Fig. 3, Fivoted at their upper ends to the portions 4 of the head by means of horizontal pintles 5 Yis a pair oi relatively movable depending members or bars 6 and 6 having their lower ends bent or curved outwardly away from each other', as at 7, terminated in forwardly projecting bag engaging portions or arms S, there being vfixed on the upper end of the bar 6 for movement therewith a toothed ratchet 9, while pivoted on the pintle 5 at the upper end of bar 6 is a pawl 10 adapted for engagement with said ratchet and having an operating handle l1. Extended between the pintles 5 at the front face ot the arms 6 is a link 12 adapted ior bracing the forward ends oi the pintles to equalize the strain thereon.

Pivoted as at 13 to the member or bar 6 is a toggle link 14 of a length to extend transversely between the bars and project beyond the bars 6, as at 15, there beposed to project inward toward the bar 6 and having at its inner end a pin or stud 19 which may be entered through one of the perforations 1G for pivotally connecting the links at a point between the ends of the link 14, there being pivoted to the outer or pivoted end oi link 18 and to the bar G a U-shaped engaging member or keeper 20 in which the link 14 is seated at a point adjacent its free end to lock the links against relative movement.

In practice, an initial adjustment of the member 6 may be obtained by disengaging the pawl l0, which is operable by means of the handle 11, from the ratchet 9, whereupon the bar may be swung freely on its pivot, the bar being finally locked in its adjusted position by again engaging the pawl with the ratchet. The projecting end of the link 15 is then grasped and moved upward to the dotted line position illustrated in Fig. 1, thus moving the bar 6 to the dotted line position, whereupon the mouth of the bag may be readily arranged over the arms 8, aiter which the lever' 14 is moved downward to full line position, thus spreading the bars apart for distending the mouth oi the bag and securing the same in place on the arms. The lever 14 is finally seated in the keeper 20, thus to lock the parts in bag holding position.

It will be understood that when the bagris in place on the holder its mouth will be distended to permit oi the material being freely introduced thereinto and that after the bag has been filled it is freed from the holder by manipulating the lever 14 to move the parts to dotted line position, as in Fig. 1.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. In a bag holding device, the combination of a head secured to a support, pivots thereon, relatively movable bars mounted on the pivots and provided with bag-engaging portions, a ratchet and pawl for adjusting one of the bars, a toggle link mechanism lor producing' relative movement of the bars and including an operating handle, and a locking device for holding the mechanism from collapsing.

2. In a bag holding device, the combination of a pair of relatively movable bars suitably mounted and provided with bag-engaging portions, a link pivoted to one of the bars and extending across the second bar to form a handle, a link pivoted to the first link and to the second bar, and a locking device on the second bar for engaging the extend ing portion of the first link to lock the parts in position.
