Be it known that I, WALTER J. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whip-Holders, of which the following is a specication.

Teamsters and drivers are frequently annoyed and put to some considerable expense by the loss of whips when leaving their teams unattended. Particularly is this the case when a fine whip is provided, since the temptation to appropriate the same is increased proportionate to the value of the article.

This invention has for its object to provide means for securing the whip against loss by theft when the team is left standing and unattended. I

The invention consists of a whip holder of such form as to completely inclose the whip and comprising a case having one or both ends adjustable and adapted to be secured in the adjusted position so as to preclude unauthorized access thereto for pilfering of the whip by any party piratically inclined. In the preferred construction, the case or holder is extensible to be lengthcned or shortened according to the length and size of the whip, and the removable end is adapted to be secured in the adjusted position so as to prevent its unauthorized removal.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.

While the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The whip holder is of tubular or hollow formation so as to receive the whip and completely inclose the same, and comprises a body and a cap or inclosing end. The

parts of the holder or case are preferably formed of steel tubing of proper size and selected with a view to obtain close joints between the movable parts. The holder may be of a given size or may be adjustable, and according to the degree of adjustment one or both ends may be movable or arranged to have telescopic connection with the body of the case. The drawings illustrate a type of holder in which both end pieces are adjustable, each adapted to be secured in the adjusted position by means of a lock contrivance which preferably is of the hasp variety so as to close over and embrace the holder and interlock with the parts thereof. The body of the case or holder is designated by the reference numeral l and is adapted to be secured to any convenient portion of the vehicle, such as the side of buggy bar or bar of a buggy, the pole or tongue of a carriage, the thill or shaft of a wagon or the body of the contrivance. The location of the hold er with reference tothe vehicle is a matter of convenience as well as the securing means employed for fastening the device thereto and will depend in a great measure upon the design and construction of the vehicle to which the holder is to be fitted. Suitable clips or fastenings 2 areemployed for firmly attaching the body l of the holder to the supporting means, care being observed to provide for telescopic movement of one or both ends according as the latter slide within or over the body l. When both ends are made adjustable the one slides over and the other within the body, thereby compensating in a measure for the differences in size of the butt end or lash of a whip. The end 3 telescopes or slides within one end of the body l, whereas the opposite end 4 is adapted to slip over the opposite end of the body l. Each end piece is closed at its outer extremity to prevent access to the interior of the case when the end pieces are in place and made fast. The end piece 4 constitutes the cap or cover and may be of any length desired. The end piece 3 closes the inner end of the body l and receiving the smaller end of the whip is of less diameter than the inclosing end piece 4. The inner end of the body l is preferably reduced, thereby admitting of the end piece 3 being of a minimum diameter.

The end pieces are adapted to be secured by lock means, the same embodying a hasp 5 having a portion curved to receive the holder and snugly embrace the same. The hasp 5 is suitably hinged at one end, preferably to a plate 6 which is secured to the part of the vehicle designed to receive the holder and which plate may be straight or formed with a depression to receive the holder. A projection 7 upon the inner side of the hasp is adapted to enter corresponding openings or depressions in the end piece and body and interlock there with to prevent possible movement of the end piece after the hasp has been closed upon the holder and se cured by a lock such as commonly employed in connection with hasps. The body l is provided near its end with an opening or depression 8 to receive the projection 7, whereas the end piece is formed with a series of openings or depressions 9 according as the end piece slides over or within the body. When the end piece is moved to a position to bring corresponding openings or depressions 8 and 9 in register, it may be secured by closing the hasp which causes the projection 7 to enter the corresponding openings or depressions, said hasp being secured in the closed position by means of a lock l0 oi any make or type.

When the whip is placed within the case, its butt portion may project a short distance and is adapted to be inclosed by the cap 4, or should it be desired to slip the whip entirely within the body it is preferred to provide openings or slots 11 in the sides of the body near or at the receiving end to admit of starting the whip when it is required to remove the same, said openings or slots being covered by the inclosed end 4 when slipped upon the body. By reason of the adjustability of one or both endpieces, the case or holder may be adjusted within certain limits to the'length of the whip to be protected, and after the case or holder has been adjusted, it is not necessary to vary the length thereof tor the same whip. When the team is to be left standing, the hasp securing the inclosing end 4 is loosened and thrown open, thereby permitting the cap 4 to be removed so that the whip may be placed within the case aiter which the cap is replaced and secured by means of the hasp and coperating part in the rnanner set forth.

From the foregoing it will be understood that the invention provides simple and effective means for both protecting a whip against the weather as weil as from theft, the case being readily adjustable to different lengths oi whips and adapted to be rmly secured to any convenient portion o the vehicle so as to be out ot the way yet readily accessible for receiving the whip and to admit of the same being reached when required for use.

The whip holder having both ends adjustable is adapted to be applied to a buggy having a short bar, but for wagons and other vehicles it is preferred to have the whip holder provided with one end, only, extensible. The cap or inclosing end 4 is adapted to slip over the body l, hence said body must be spaced from the depressed portion o the plate 6 in order to make provision for the free sliding movements ot the cap both when removing and placing the same in position. The clip 2, near the receiving end o the holder, is shown most clearly in Fig. 5 and comprises a yoke 12 and bow 13, the latter having its legs or side members passed through openings in the end portions of the yoke 12, said openings being sufliciently large to admit of a tilting movement of the yoke upon the bow so as to space the body 1 a greater or less distance from the support 14 to which the holder may be attached. The yoke 12 is made thicker at the center and is attenuated from said central point towards the ends, whereby upon adjusting the yoke, the distance between the body and the support 14 may be regulated according to the thickness oi the body or inclosing end to admit oi the latter slipping freely on and ott Y the body l.

Itis contemplated to secure the cap or inclosing end 4 to the body 1 in any manner, either by means of a hasp, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, or by means of a lock bolt 15, as indicated in Fig. 6, said lock bolt passing through registering openings in opposite sides oi the body and cap. The openings in the sides of the body may consist oi the slots ll, or said slots may be formed in the sides of the cap and openings provided in opposite sides of the body to receive the lock bolt 15. Said lock bolt may be supplied with locking means,

whereby when slipped into position it automatically locks, or it may be provided with an opening to receive a padlock 16 or other lock device.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

l. A whip holder comprising a case consisting of a body and an inclosing end, the latter being removable, and means for securing the inclosing end to the body and the latter to a support.

2. A whip holder adapted to inclose a whip and comprising a body and an inclosing end, the latterhavingl telescopic connection with the body to admit of varying the length thereof, and means for securing the inclosing end ot' the body in the adjusted position.

3. A whip holder comprising a body and an inclosing end having sliding connection with the body, said body and nclosing end having corresponding openings or depressions in their sides, and a hasp having `a projecting portion to enter registering openings or depressions in the body and inclosing end to secure the latter', and a lock for fastening the hasp.

4. An extensible whip holder or case having opposite ends of diilerent diameters, and means for securing either or both end pieces to the body of the holder' and the latter to a support.

5. A whip holder comprising a case having opposite telescoping end pieces, and means for securingthe end pieces to the body in an adjusted position and the holder to a support.

6. A whip holder', the combination of a body portion, means for securingsaid body portion to a part of the vehicle, an inclosingcnd having telescopic connection with the body portion, a hasp attached to the part of the vehicle receiving the body of the holder and adapted when closed to prevent movement of the inclosing end, and a lock for securing the hasp when closed.

7. In a whip holder of the character specified, the combination of a hollow body, an inclosing end or cap adapted to slip thereon, and securing means for fastening said whip holder to a part of the vehicle or other support, said securing means comprisingan adjustable part of varying thickness and placed between the body of the whip holder and the support, whereby the distance between said body and support may be varied to permit free movement of the cap or inclosing end when slipping the same upon or off said body.
