Description

PATENTED JULY 3A0., 1907. W. M. BLACK. BOX FOR WATCH MOVEMENTS APPLICATION FILED MAY 28, 1906.
THE Nomus PETERS co. WASHINGTON. D. c.
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
WILLIAM M.. BLACK, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO SCOVILL MANUFACTUR- ING COMPANY, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
BOX FOR WATCH-MOVEMENTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedJuly 30, 1907.
Application filed May 28,1906. Serial No.319,226.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. BLACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New I'Iaven and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boxes for Watch-Movements, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object oi this invention is to provide a watch movement box with a spring for engaging the dial of the watch movement and which will not scratch or crack the dial.
The invention consists of an annular spring having tangentially arranged spring-fingers raised above it, the annular body oi the spring being designed to come next to the dial and the fingers to play upon a washer placed next to the end plate, all as I will proceed now more particularly to set forth and finally claim.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, in the several `figures oi which like parts are similarly designated, Figure I is a longitudinal section, greatly enlarged, of a watch movement box of approved construction and containing one form of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation oi the watch movement box. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. l, but on a smaller scale, and containing the watch movement in elevation. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a form of spring shown in Figs. l and 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of another form of spring. Fig. 6 is a cross-section of the form of spring shown in Fig. 5. A
The body l oi the box has the lip or flange 2 on which is hung the watch movement 3 by means of its dial or other flange 4. The end plate 5, oi glass or other material, is arranged in a double shoulder 6 in the box, with an interposed metal washer 7, and it is held in position by a wedge-shape slit spring ring 8, although these features are not herein claimed and my invention is not limited to them.
The cover member 9 has an end plate 10, of glass or other material, seated in a double shoulder ll upon a metal washer 12 and held in place by a wedge-shape slit spring ring I3, and again these features are not herein claimed and my invention is not limited to them, but my invention does include theuse of the washer l2, especially when the end plate l0 is made of glass or other transparent or translucent material.
The cover is provided with a-projection 14, which may be in the form oi an internal circumferential bead, or a series oi inwardly projecting devices. Upon this projection rests a flat annulus l5, having a number of tangential upwardly projecting spring-fingers 16, the
outer ends 17 of which are preferably made straight or flat so as to bear against the washer I2. By use of this form oi spring with its flat annular bodyl resting against the dial of the watch movement, all liability of scratching or cracking the dial is obviated, and a spring whose pressure is equalized throughout its extent is secured.
As shown in Figs. l, 3 and 4, the spring-fingers 17 are cut out oi the rim oi the ring 15, in pairs, so as to project away from one another, but instead oi that construction, the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6, may be used, wherein the ring 18 has a series oi tangential upwardly projecting spring-fingers I9 projecting in the same direction and each having the straight or at end 20. Such a spring may be used in the same manner and in the same relation, and with substantially the same effect as that shown in Figs. l, 3 and 4. These orms ot springs are to be distinguished from prior springs made as corrugated plates, or with radially projecting spring-lingers which bear upon the dial, and they are also to be distinguished from these and other prior constructions by the fact that their spring-fingers do not come into contact with the watch dial, but on the contrary, are arranged away from and out of contact with such dial, and in contact with the end plate of the box, and consequently, unlike prior constructions, these lingers are protected from damage in using the box, and are always free to exert their spring pressure.
lhat I claim is 1. A box for watch movements, having a cover provided with an inwardly extending projection, a ring mounted upon said projection and having tangentially arranged spring-lingers extending upwardly therefrom, and an end plate against which said fingers project.
, 2. A box for watch movements, having a body adapted to receive and support the watch movement, and a cover for said body having an end plate and a ring spring movably arranged in said cover and provided with tangentially arranged upwardly projecting spring'iingers adapted to impinge upon the end plate and to thereby exert a down Ward pressure-upon the watchmovement, and means to connect the body and cover.
3. A box for watch movements, having a cover and an end plate therein, a washer placed next to saidend plate inside of the cover, a spring comprising a ring having tangentially arranged outwardly projecting spring-fingers, and means to support said ring within the cover.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of May A. D. 1906.
WILLIAM M. BLACK.
