Description

No. 861,524. PATENTED JULY 30,. 1907.
J. 0. LALONDE.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 28,1906.
ZZZ? Z I! v 1 1 i L mm" mum E i WW Inventor,
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH O.,LAL01\{DE, or MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA, AssreNonor ens-THIRD TO VICTOR- GUERTIN, or MONTREAL, CANADA.
WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .Tosnrn O. LALoNnE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in the city and district of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
My invention relates to ratchet wrenches; the object of my invention is to provide a ratchet wrench with a removable head having nut receiving recesses adapted to engage over a nut from a direction either parallel or transverse to its axis; a further object is to provide an easily operated means for normally maintaining a removable head in position; and, my invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein illustrated and described, characterized by a bifurcated retaining head, having therein a ratchet head normally maintained in position by means of a slidable spring actuated retaining plate.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, in which drawings'similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of one side of the wrench; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same side of the wrench, with the ratchet head retaining plate removed; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the opposite side of the wrench; Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow; Fig. 5 is a perspective of a pawl and spring; and Fig. 6 is a perspective of a ratchet head retaining plate.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a handle having an integral bifurcated expanded head 2, which is cut away to form an approximately round socket 3, having a flange 4. i
Re vably disposed in the socket 3, and adapted to re ate on the flange 4, is a toothed ratchet head 5, provided with recesses 6 adapted'to engage the nutto be turned, which recesses extend from the periphery towards the center of the ratchet head, so that the walls of the recesses may be passed over the faces of a nut when the wrench is inserted from a point either transverse or parallel to the axis of the nut. The periphery of the removable head 5' is provided with teeth 7 Adjacent the wall of the socket 3, the head 2 of the wrench is provided with recesses 8, in which are rockably disposed the pawls 9, which are normally maintained in engagement with the teeth 7 by means of the flat springs 10 carried by the pawls and bearing against Y the walls of the recesses 8. The pawls 9 are both set in the same direction, so as to prevent rotation of the head 5 in one direction, and to force the head in an opposite Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed Tune 28, 1906. Serial No- 323,780.
Patented July 30, 1 907.
direction when the handle is reciprocated and the recesses 6 are engaged with a nut.
Slidably disposed on the handle is a bifurcated retaining member 11,- the bifurcated portion of which normally extends over the head 5, and is adapted to retain the head within the socket 3. The rear end of the slidable plate 11 is provided with cars 12, adapted to engage over the handle 1 and to act asa guide for the plate. Centrally of its length, the platell is provided with a slot 13, having a flange l4 projecting therein.- Disposed through the slot 13, and secured to the handle 1, is a headed guide member 15, the under surface of the head of which bears on the fiange l i, so that the head is flush with the upper surface of the plate 11.
A spring 16 has one end secured to the handle 1, and has its opposite end secured to the plate 11, so that the tension of the spring normally maintains the bifurcated end of the plate 11 over the ratchet head 5, so that said head .2 are provided with projecting cars 18, under which the removable head is adapted to be inserted, and when so inserted under said cars is adapted to be held in operative positionby means of the slidable plate 11.
When it is desired to turn a nut in an opposite direction to the one in which it would be turned by the arrangement described, the wrench is simply reversed. The head 5 may be made in any number with different sizes of recesses 6, so as to adapt the wrench to use in connection with nuts of any size.
.Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a. wrench, the combination comprising a handle having a bifurcated expanded head formed with a flange and termed with cars projecting over the flange, a removable ratchet head'disposed on the flange and under the ears and provided with nut engaging recesses and extend ing from its periphery, slidable means for maintaining the ratchet head on the flange and under the ears, and means for rotating the ratchet head with relation to the handle.
2. In a wrench, the combination comprising a handle, having a head formed with a'socket open at one side, a
removable ratchet head disposed in the socket and prow vided with nut engaging recesses adapted to register with the open side of the socket, a slidable member disposed over the ratchet head, and means for rotating the ratchet head with relation to the handle."
3. In a wrench, the combination comprising a handle having a head formed with a socket a portion of the wall of which is removed, a removable ratchet head disposed in the socket and provided with nut engaging recesses in its periphery, a spring actuated member disposed over the ratchet head, and means for rotating the ratchet head with relation to the handle.
4. In a wrench, the combination comprising a handle having a bifurcated head, a removable rotatable ratchet head carried by the bifurcated head and provided with nut engaging recesses, means for rotating the ratchet head in one direction and for preventing its reverse rotation, a plate provided with ears adapted to engage the handle, and provided with a slot, said plate extending over said ratchet head, a guide member disposed in the slot, and a spring secured to the handle and the plate.
5. In a wrench, the combination comprising, a handle having a socket therein, a removable rotatable ratchet head carried in the socket and provided with nut engaging recesses, means for rotating and preventing reverse rotation of the ratchet head, a plate slidably disposed on the handle and projecting over the ratchet head, and provided with a central slot having a flange projecting therein, a headed guide member disposed through the slot, bearing on the flange, and secured to the handle, and a spring secured to the handle and the plate, and adapted to normally maintain the plate over the ratchet head.
6. In a wrench, the combination comprising a handle having a socket therein, a. removable rotatable ratchet head carried in the-socket and provided with nut engaging recesses, means for rotating and preventing reverse rotation of the ratchet head, a plate slidably disposed on the handle and projecting over the ratchet head, and provided with a central slot having a flange projecting therein, a headed guide member disposed through the slot, bearing on the flange, and secured to the handle, and a spring secured to the handle and the plate, and adapted to normally maintain the plate over the ratchet head, and said plate having a projecting lip.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH O. LALONDE.
