RICHARD MONTGOMERY, OF NE W-YORK, N. Y. Letters Patent No. 86,0'28, dated January 19, 1869.
INIPROVED METALLIC COLUlVIN.
w The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part: of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD MONTGOMERY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Corrugated-Metal Column; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact descriptionthereof, reference being had to the accornpanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is an elevation, illustrating two of my improved columns, supporting and connected by a horizontal transverse beam;
Figure 2, a view, in perspective, of one of my colbearings for four horizontal beams extending therefrom in opposite, directions; and
Figure 3 is a transverse section in the line x x of iig. 1.
Similar letters indicate like parts in all of the figures.
The nature of my invention consists in uniting and combining four of my patent Ldoubly-corrugated metal beams or plates so as to form a neat, compact, strong column for the support or" all manner of structures.
The column is constructed as follows:
Two of my doubly-corrugated and flanged plates or beams A A are placed slightly apart, face to face, with their central folds inward.
4Two additional plates or beams A A', of the same form and size, are then placed with their flanges c c against the outer faces of the outer folds ofthe beams A A, so as to cover and embrace within their folds the anges d d of the said beams A A.
The four plates thus longitudinally interlocked are united and secured together by means of bolts e e extending between the flanges c c' of the two plates A' A', transversely through the folds of the plates A A, and secured by nuts, as shown in iig. 3; or they may be secured together by rivets or other suitable fastenings known in the art.
The columns thus mademay be inserted and secured within suitable cast-iron bases B B, and the upper ends of one or more of the four plates of the column may be bent or curved to a horizontal plane, to afford a bearing for 'horizontal beams, as may be required. (See iig. 2 of the drawings.)
Having thus fully described my invention,
I lclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A corrugated-metalcolumn or support, constructed substantially as herein set forth.
' R. MONTGOMERY. Witnesses:
DAVID A. BURR, WM. H. Rown.
