Description

To all whom it may concern w t g'wtw i iLLiAM W. HARDINQOF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA. Lea mmt No 86pm, dated Jamia'ry 19, 1869.
- IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF PRINTING AND WRITING-PAPER The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makingpan of the same.
' by declare the following to be a full and'exact descriptionvof the same. y l
flhe'nature of my invention consists in coating both sides of a sheet of paper with an opaque sizing, and then calendaring it on both sides.
I take a continuous sheet of ordinary paper, and
then apply, by means of a revolving brush, or revolving felt roller, an opaque liquid sizing, to each side of the sheet of paper. This sizing is then dried thereon, by passing the sheet through a heated chamber, or by passing it over a heated cylinder covered with cloth or felt. The sheet is then passed between a'doublc .set of heated .or cold calender-rollers, and each side will be calender-ed.
'1 make a good opaque size of one pound of glue, or
gelatiuc, and 'ten pounds of china-clay, five pounds of blank fix, (sulphate of baryta,) one pound of linseedoil, or other similar oil, and about fifty pounds of water. Instead of oil, wax or stearinc may be used in the same proportion; Any tinting-material may be added, if desired.
The advantage of this invention is that low-priced paper, with an inferior or discolored surface, can be converted intowriting or printing-paper, having a fine finished white or tinted surface on both sides.-
Instead'oi' the opaque size above mentioned, other opaque size compound, of glue, clay, or other wellknown ingredients for mak ng liquid enamel, might be substituted.
Having thus described by improvement,
What I claim, is-- 1. The process of treating papers by applying opaque size to both sides, to give asinface-oolor to both sides,
indcpendcnt of the body of the paper.
,both sides with opaque white or tinted size, for imparting color and iinish to the two surfaces of the sheet, independent of the color or surfaces of the original sheet.
