Description
No. 859,560. PATENTED JULY 9, 1907 V O. HYDE.
INDIVIDUAL BACK REST FOR BENGHES. APPLIOATION FILED 00T.29,1906.
VROOMAN o. HYDE,
or OKLAHOMA, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
, INDIVIDUAL BAoK-REsT non BENoIIEs.
To till whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VROOMAN O. HYDE, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Oklahoma city, in the county of Oklahoma and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Individual Back-Rests for Benches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to back-rests for each person separately where benches or boards are used forseats, and consist of two standards or posts to which crossbars or slats are secured permanently, and to the outer surface of said posts, mid-wayor above is pivoted one end of brace-bars adapted to hook over the front edge of the bench or board constituting the seat and near said hooks are pivoted to said braces stay-bars provided with a longitudinal slot and attached to the lower outside portion of said posts in a manner adapting the back-rost to fold in a contact and convenient form when not in active service.
The objects of my invention are; first, to provide a rest for the backs of persons at open-air or other meetings where temporary seats are used without backrests; second, to provide a back-rest which will be cheap and durable; third, one adapted to occupy a minimum space during transportation and storage.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the back-rest embodying my invention and having a seat cushion attached to the lower back or cross slat; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the back-rest as folded for transportation or storage; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of one of the duplicate slotted stay-bars.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
In the drawings, A refers to the back-rest as assem' bled; B and G are the standards or posts in which are firmly secured the ends of the crossbars or slats a a and a; the brace-bars b are provided with downwardly turned hooks 1) adapted to. hook around the front edge of a bench D of'which E is one ol the legs and E is its brace or of a board, the opposite ends of the said bracebars being perforated for the rivets or bolts 0, thus holding in position the upper portion of the back-rest A; and to hold'the lower ends of the posts B and O in position the stay-bars c are provided, having one end loosely secured to the said posts by the rivets, screws, or bolts C, the other end being loosely riveted to the brace-bar b as at e.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed 0etober29,1906. Serial No. 341,122.
Patented July 9, 1907.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an individual back-rest for temporary seats, the
- combination of the back with brace-bars I) pivoted thereto at each side, the said brace-bars having their lowerends flattened transversely and downwardly bent into hooks b, the backward slant of which form heels provided with beards I), the said bars I: having a mid-way upward bend b" and having pivoted near their heels the front end of the longitudinally slotted stay-bars o the rear ends of which'are loosely secured to the outer surface and near the lower portion of the said back, substantially as de scribed.
2. In an individual back-rest for temporary seats consisting of a back, having slats secured in side posts longitudinally slotted stay-bars and bracebars, the duplicate brace-bars I) having mid-way their length an upward semi circular curve and having in one end the back-post pivoting holes, the opposite end terminating in a downward and backwardly turned hook 1) its width being transverse to the body of the said brace-bar and at an angle of near forty degrees therewith, forming a heel having a beard Z),
as shown and described.
3. In an individual backrest for temporary seats having a back with brace-bars attached and stay-bars attached to both, the stay-bars 0 having a perforation 0 near one of its ends and a longitudinal slot 0 being above the center and terminating in downward projections to or below the center, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VROOMAN O. HYDE.
