WIRE-CLAMP.
Speeication of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1907.
Application ilevd August 11, 1906. Serial No. 330.159.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Steele, in the county of Chouteau, State oi Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WirewGlamps; and I dol hereby declare the following to be a lull, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. y
.The present invention relates to improvements in wire clamps, and more particularly to devices oi that nature which are used for the purpose of connecting the l'ree end oi a fence or similar wire to a tightening or stretching mechanism.
The object of the invention consists in the production of a simple, inexpensive, and eiicient wire clamp, and to this end, the invention consists in the construction combination, and arrangement oi parts, all as here inaiter fully described, specifically claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are designated by corresponding reference numoral-s in the several views.
Of the said drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective View oi the clamp, and Fig. 2 is an elevational view showing the opposite side oi the clamp.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the clamp is shown as comprising a plate 5 provided with a longitudinal lug 6 forming a seat 7 for the reception of the wire 8. The clamp plate is further provided with a pin 9 mounted therein and extending on both sides thereof, one end o said pin carrying a cam 10 projecting within the seat 7 and formed with a serrated edge 1l, the cam being rigidly secured to said pin end so as to turn therewith, when said pin is rotated by means of the crank handle 12 which is secured to its opposite end.
The clamp carries a ring 13 to which one end of a chain forming a part of the stretching mechanism is attached.
In practice, the free end of the fence wire is positioned in the seat 7 in the clamp plate, and the cam is then rotated to bring the operative portion thereofinto binding contact with the wire, as will be readily understood. l
What is claimed, is-
1. In a fence wire stretcher, a clamp comprising a plate provided with a longitudinal seat adapted to receive a fence wire, a transversely-disposed pin rotatably mounted in said plate and extending on opposite sides thereof, a cam secured to one end of said pin and extending into said seat, and an actuating handle secured to the opposite end of said pin for rotating the latter to bring the opera tive portion of said cam into binding contact with the wire, to hold the latter in place in said seat.
2. In a fence wire stretcher, a clamp comprising a plate having' an integral depending lip forming a longitudinal seat adapted to receive a fence wire, a transversely-disposed pin rotatably mounted in said plate with its ends disposed on opposite sides thereof, a cam mounted upon one end of said pin and extending into said seat, said cam having a serrated edge, and an actuating handle secured to the opposite end of said pin for rotating the latter, to bring the operative portion of said cam into binding contact with the wire, to hold the latter in place in said seat.
In testimony whereof, I atlix my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
