SHOVELlNG-BOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1907.
Application filed November 27,1905- Serial No. 289,267.
To aZZ Mill/(flit it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL WILDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vashington, in the county of Washington and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in shoveling-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in shoveling boards, and the object of my invention is to provide a shoveling board which can be readily attached to or detached from wagon boxes one which can be easily locked in closed position, so as to serve as an endgate of the wagon-box, and which can be used11 as a dump or shoveling board whendesire My invention relates to certain other novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of the shoveling board attached to the wagon-box. Fig. 2 is a side view showing the shoveling board in J its lowered position, and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
A, represents the wagon box, and B, is the shoveling board or end gate.
The shoveling board is made of the usual construction and is provided with side pieces 1, 1, of sheet metal, or of any other desired material, which fit on the outside of the side boards of the wagon box.
Secured to the side pieces, 1, in any suit able manner are the supporting rods 2, 2, which terminate at their upper ends in hooks 3, and adapted to pass around the studs 4. These hooks preferably form a double loop and the free end 5 is provided with an eye 6, adapted to receive a chain or other means 7. These chains pass through openings (1 a, in the cross piece O, which is secured to the rear of the shoveling board, and connected to these chains are the connecting rods 8 and 9. One of the connecting rods 8 is connected at its outer end to a locking bar 10, which is preferably curved at one end, as at 11, and a series of holes 12 are formed therein, the said holes receive a pin 13 therein, by which the locking bar can be readily adjusted to suit the demand.
The connecting rod 9 is provided at its outer endwith an opening 14, which is slightly curved at its outer end. This loop or open ing 14 is adapted to receive the curved end 11 of the bar 10. and by throwing the bar upward it will draw the chains 7 taut, and a link 15 which is secured in the end of the bar 10, will hook over the rod 9, thereby holding the shoveling board in locked position.
WVhen the end gate is closed as shown in Fig. 1, the lower edges of the side pieces 1, 1, of sheet metal preferably rest upon the protruding ends of the cross-bar 20 secured beneath the rear end of the wagon box or body.
Should it be desired to lower the board, for any purpose, all that is necessary is to remove the link 15 from the rod 9, and with draw the bar 10 from the opening 14, and permit the shoveling board to be lowered. It will be held in this lowered position by the bar 10 and enlarged end 16 of the rod 9 engaging the openings of the cross piece C.
When it is desired to remove the end gate or shoveling board, the link 15 is released from the rod 9, and the bar 10 is withdrawn from the opening 14, and the supporting rods 2 are removed from the studs 4. i
It will be seen from the foregoing that I have provided a shoveling board which can be secured to a wagon box with comparative ease and by means which are not clumsy, but simple, and consisting of few parts which are not liable to get out of order.
It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth; but, I
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a wagon box, of an end gate pivotally secured thereto, rods pivotally connected with the end gate at one end and to the wagon box at the other, these rods having hooks by which they are removably pivoted to the wagon box, the ends of the rods after forming hooks terminating in eyes and a flexible connection connected with said eyes and adapted to extend around the end gate and be secured together at their free ends whereby to fasten the gate in its closed position.
2. The combination with a wagon box, of an end gate having a cross bar secured thereto, the ends of which cross bar protrude beyond the side edges of the gate and have holes in said protruding ends, flexible devices connected with the sides of the Wagon box and passed through the holes in the cross bar on the end gate and means for drawing the free ends of the flexible devices together.
3. The combination with a wagon body and end gate, of rods pivotally connected to the end gate and having hooks on their upper ends, studs secured to the wagon box to which said hooks are removably connected and flexible devices connected with the hooks and adapted to extend around the end gate and be drawn and fastened together at their inner ends whereby the end gate is held in its closed position.
4. The combination with a Wagon box and an end gate removably connected therewith, of rods pivotally connected to the sides of the end gate and adapted to be removably hooked to the wagon box and flexible devices connected with the hooked ends of the rods and adapted to have permanent sliding connection wth the end gate.
5. The combination with a wagon box and an end gate removably connected therewith, of rods pivotally connected to the sides of the end gate and adapted to be removably hooked to the wagon box, flexible devices connected with the hooked ends of the rods and adapted to have permanent sliding connection with the end gate and means for drawing the free ends of said connection together and locking them.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL VVILDE.
