FLUSHING DEVICE FOR WATER-CLOSETBOWL-S AND'THE LIKE.

Be it known that I, LEWISWATSON EGGLES TON, a citizen of the United States, and-a This invention relates to flushing devices,
and 'it consists substantially in the details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described and pointed out in the claims.
The object of the invention'is to rovide devices of the character referred to w ich are simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive to install, besides being thoroughly effective and reliable in operation, and possessing the capacity for long and repeated service.
The above and additional objects are attained by means substantially such as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which Figure 1 is a broken part sectional viewof flushmgdevices embodying my improvements,-the normal positions of the operative elements thereof being shown in full lines, while the dotted lines represent substantially the positions occupied by said elements at.

Before proceeding with a more detailed description, it may be stated that in the form of my improvements herein shown, I employ.

the water is discharged into the tank. Cooperatively organized with said nozzle or injector, and normally closing the same, is a s ecially constructed plug-valve having slida le movement within said casing, and movably connecting with which is a specially constructed actuating le ver therefor, through the medium of which said valve is caused to open the outlet of the nozzle or injector, and again close the same, as will presently be explained. A specially constructed controling member is employed for said lever, intermediate of which and a co-operating float are other members of special construction, it being understood that my .improved flush.- ing devices are primarily actuated through the medium of a pull-chain in the ordinary way.
Reference being had to the drawings by the designating characters thereon, 1 ,represents a water-tank mounted at a suitable elevation above the water-closet bowl (not shown) or the like to be flushed, the same being of any suitable material and dimensions,
and either open or 'closed at the top, as desired. Extendin upwardly through the bottom-2 of the tani, at 3, is a water-sup ly pipe 4 for the tank, leading from any suita 1e. source, and which, as shown, is provided at the upper end thereof with a casing 5, extending substantially at right-angles thereto, the
same being open at the inner end thereof.
Leading from the upper end of said supplypipe 4 s a nozzle or injector 9, preferably conical toward the outlet thereof, while located within the casing 5, at its said open inner end, is a slidable plug-valve 10, having at the operative face thereof (disposed before the outlet of the nozzle or injector) an elastic cushion or packin 11, of suitable material, as rubber, and at its inner end an extension 12 having averticalopening 13 therethrough, between the sides of which works a swinging lever 14, the lower end of the shorter arm 15 of which is pivoted at 16 to the end of anarm 17 extending from the lower section 7 of the valve-casing 5, and the end of the longer arm of which is preferably somewhat enlarged and formed with an angular slot 18 therein, the branches of which occupy vertical and horizontal positions, respectively, in the normal (vertical) position of said lever. Work. ing in said angular slot 18 in the end of the longer arm of said swinging lever 14, is a pin or boss 19, carried by a normally horizontally-disposedmember 20 (herein preferably shown as comprising duplicate arallel parts) provided near the outer end t ereof with a weight 21, while movably connected at 22 to the inner end thereof is the upper end of a downwardly and inwardlyturned link 23, pivoted at 24 to the inner end of an arm 25, extending from the upper section 6 of the valve-casin 5, and to the lower end of which is connects the rod 26 of a float 27, as shown. Movably connecting with the outer end of v the said member 20, is a link 28, having movable connection at 29 with the inner end of an operating lever 30, pivoted at 31, at the i flush-pipe 35, leading to the water-closet or other bowl, is the longer leg 36 of a siphon 37,
the-shorter leg 38 of which terminates at its lower end a proper distance from said bottom 2, and, in order to supply air to the siphon at the end of the flushing operation I provide at one side of the end of said shorter leg 38 thereof, a downwardly extending vent-tube 39 communicating with the interior of such leg and reaching at its lower open end to within a short distance from the bottom of a cup 40, secured to the side of the leg, and the sides of which extend upwardly to a suitable height about 'said vent-tube. During the flushing operation the vent-tube will act to siphon the water from said cup, as is apparent, and in consequence of which said venttube will remain open in fulfilment of its I function as such, until the water entering the tank again reaches a height at which it will overflow the said cup.

The parts being in the positions thereof indicated infull lines in Fig. 1, it is apparent that on pulling upon the pull-chain 33 with sufficient force the weightedmember 20 will be elevated at, its outer end, the movable connection 22 of the inner end of said member with the upper end of link 23 serving at this time as a fulcrum therefor. As said member 20 is thus elevated at its outer end, the in or boss 19 thereof will be carried up to the orizontal branch of the said angular slot 18 in the upper end of the lever 14, whereupon the res sure of water at the outlet of the nozz e or injector 9 at the upper end of the supply-' pipe 4, assisted by t e movement of member 20 forces the slidable block valve 10 outshown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, t

this action causing the said lever to swing 1nwardly within the tank, the said in or boss now entering the said horizontal ranch of said slot, it being apparent that the operations described are carried out practically simultaneously. As soon as, the valve 10 is opened water enters the tank and rises therein to the height (indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2) necessary to enable the s i honing to take place, the float being cause to rise at the same time, as is ap arent; and then, as the water leaves the tan through the longer leg of the siphon, the float and its connections fall with thewater inthe' tank, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, the lever 14 and member 20 up to the time the float starts to fall, having remained practically in the positions to which they were first carried, with a new supply of water still entering the tank. The opening of the valve 10 is limited by the engagement of the swinging lethe float 27 reaches its lowest osition, as l ie weighted lever .20 is retracted, as shown in dotted lines, until the pin 19 is above the vertical part of the slot 18. At this point the weight 21 causes the lever to move downward carrying the pin 19 into the vertical part of said slot. As the float continues to be raised, the weighted lever is pushed outward carrying with it the swinging lever 14 until the valve 10 is closed.
The end of the said longer leg 36 of the siphon enters a water trap 42 (which, however, may be located in the closet bowl itself),
from which the pipe 35 leads to the bowl (not shown), and thus it will be understood that there will always be pressure in said leg to prevent the siphoning operation from taking place until the water in the tank has bend in the siphon.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A flushing device for water closet bowls and the like, comprising a tank, a siphon therein, a water supply pipe extending into -ver 14 with the pin 45 in the arm 25. When a height considerably above the the tank, a valve for opening and closing the water supply plpe, a swinging lever for operating the yalve, a weighted lever for moving the swingm lever, a link pivoted to one end of the weig ted lever, a rod having a float pivoted to the other end of the weighted le.

2. In flushing-devices for water-closet bowls and the like, a tank, a water-supply pipe extendinglthereinto, a valve for opemng and closing t e outlet for said pipe, and
means for controlling the movements of said I valve, comprising a swinging lever in direct movable connection with the valve, and a weighted member having independent movable relation with said lever, the lever having an angular slot therein and the said member a ortion working'in the slot.
