M. HOWE. SEPARABLE DOUBLE LETTER SHEET.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 7, 1905.

letters and manifold copies of the replies -NrrEn STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
' MORTIMER A. HOWE, or TACOMA, WASHINGTON;
SEPARABLE DOUBLE LETTER-SHEET.
Specification of Letters Patent. A pli ation fil d February 7, 1905. Serial No. 244,548.
; Patented June 25, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MoR'rIMER- A. Hown,
a citizenof the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Se arable Double Letter Sheets, of which the ollowing is a-specification.
My invention relatesto devices for producing and preserving manifold copies of thereto, and has for its objects the roviding of a separable double letter s eet having four flat surfaces after folding, one of. I
which is to be'used in writing a letter and the surface directly underneath and facing the same way is to be usedto receive and hold a carbon copy of the letter written, one of the two remaining surfaces is designed to furnish space 11 on which to reply to the letter above mentloned and the surface di- ..rectly underneath thesurface on which the Q in separate places and 'valua 1e time is lost.
'1 5s inserted and ready for writing the letter and reply is written, and facing the same way is designed to' receive and hold a carbon copy of the reply, and to rovide a sin le leaf to be inserted between t e leaves of t e separable, double letter sheet which single leaf is de-' signed to receive and hold a carbon copy of the letter; said copy to be temporaril retained as an oflice record until the rep y to the letter is received.
Heretofore in keeping a record of letters and the re lies thereto, it has been the custom to ma e an impression of the letter written upon a leaf in a bound book. This; method is slow and unsatisfactory in that copies of the letter and the re ly thereto are in bringing the two together whenreference is wanted and for many other reasons too numerous to mention. With my invention these troubles are eliminated: when a reply is receivedv it is only necessary to turn the leaf over and read the record of the original etter.
Certain other minordetails are also emof the second leaf of the letter sheet, also showing the sin le'leaf and carbon sheet inserted and rea y to receive a copy of the letter. Fig. 3 is a pers ective view after the leaves have been folde ten, as referred to in the description of Fig.
. 2, and showing a carbon sheet inserted ready for writing the reply to the above mentioned on the inner surface of the first leaf.
Similar letters several views. V
A represents that surface of the first leaf upon which the original letter is. written, B
upon which a carbon copy of the original letter is made, C represents that surface of the second leaf upon which the reply to the original letter is written, D re resents that,
surface of the first leaf u on w 'ch a carbon copy of the reply is ma e,E represents the carbon sheets used in making the carbon copies above referred to, F represents the line at 'or near which they are afterward separated, G represents 1:- e porary oflice copy of the letter and H represents the carbon sheet used in making the. carbon copy on the single leaf.
The uses to which my invention may be 1 put and the manner of using the same are as ollows: A. B. G. or any person or company wishing to write a letter to a second erson or com any inserts two carbon sheets and H, amFa single sheet G between the two leaves of the letter sheet, (see Fig. 2) the surface of the carbon sheet E facing the s ace B and the copying surface of the carbon sheet H facing the single sheet G, the
letter is then written upon the surface A and copied onto the surfaces B and G, the car- .bon sheets E and H and the s' le sheet G are then removed and the double etter sheet is then despatched to the person or-company copying the same onto-the inner surface and the letter writ- 5 letter and making a carbon copy of the reply refer to similar parts the represents that surface of the second leaf at which the leaves are folded together and single leaf or temto Whom the letter is written, the single sheet f G being keptas a temporary record pending the recei t of the reply to the letter. Upon receipt oftheletter s eet the person or company to whom it is written inserts a carbon sheet E, (see Fig. 3) the copying surface of the carbon sheet E facing the surface D, the person or company then writes a reply to the letter upon the surface 0 andthe reply is copied onto the surface D, the carbon sheet is'then removed and the two leaves-separated at or near the line F and one of the leaves returned to the writer of the original letter, and the other leaf retained by the person or company re lying to theletter.
It is obvious that t e line Fma be perforated or. formed by linesof wea less, or formed by gluing two sheets together, or
formed by merely folding the two leaves to' gether and that it may be placed at any or all of the four edges of the leaves. It is also obvious that it may not at all times be necessary to print the letter head or the preamble tothe reply thereto but blank sheets may be to which replies are to be received; in substantiall the same manner as described regarding etters and the replies thereto.
Having described -my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: Y
1. As an im roved article of manufacture,
a letter sheet olded atits middle comprising two se arable parts joined by a weakens I 4 linean one of said arts having rinted on the outer face thereo a letter hea and having written on the outer face thereof a'letter and having written on the inner face thereof a carbon copy of; the reply to said letter and the otherfpart having printed on the outer face thereof the name of the party sending substantiall the original letter and the commencement of a repl thereto and having written on the outer ace thereof a reply to the original letter and having written on the inner face thereof a carbon copy of the original letter,
as described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a combination record, letter and reply set consisting of two-parts, one of said parts being a single leaf; andthe other art consist ing-of two separable leaves, fol ed together and joined by a weakened line and the two leaves so folded being interleaved with the si le leaf, and the outer surface of the first lea of the double part bein printed with-a letter headyand having a blank space, andthe inner surface ofv the second leaf of the ace and the of the double gart beingl printed with the name and adress of t e person whose letter head is on double part having a blank s outer surface of the second lea the first leaf and being rinted with a pre- B.
