Description
L -No. 856,802. PATENTED JUNE 11, 1907.
J. w. PHARROH. IRONING APPARATUS. APPLICATION FILED 00T.11.1906.
JOHN WILLIE PHARROH, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
IRONING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
Application filed October 11,1906. Serial No. 33 8,470.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN IVILLIE PHAR- ROH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which is apper tains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in ironing apparatus and the object in view is to produce a simple and efficient device of this nature, comprising a frame with suitable handle connected thereto and provided with a stationary furnace of cylindrical shape and spaced apart there from is positioned a roller adapted to be heated by the furnace and affording a suitable ironing roller, while presser rollers are mounted one at each end of the frame and adapted to smooth the clothes before being ironed.
The invention consists further in various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Fi ure 1 is a longitudinal section, vertically through my improved ironing apparatus. Fig. 2 is a detailed view of the furnace. Fig. 3 is a view of the roller which is mounted about the furnace and Fig. 4 is a detailed view of the spring upon the roller.
Reference now being bad to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the frame of my ironing apparatus having presser rollers B journaled one at each end thereof and designed to smooth out clothes to be ironed.
C designates a handle which may be of any suitable form and which is fixed to said frame.
D designates a stationary furnace, preferably of cylindrical outline, and is provided at its tapering ends with smoke apertures E to which the smoke pipes F are connected and through which gas or smoke may make exit. About the circumference of said furnace are the grooved ways II which are adapted to receive the annular ribs K formed on the inner circumference of the hollow roller N.
Q designates a spring connected to the roller there being one on each side of the frame and provided so as to allow the roller to yield as pressure is applied to the handle. A casting T is placed about a portion of the cylinder N. Interposed between the handle and the furnace is an asbestos strip R, thereby preventing the handle from becoming heated.
In operation, it will be observed that the apparatus may be rolled over an article of clothing to be ironed, the presser rollers at the ends of the frame first smoothing out the wrinkles in the cloth before the heated roller passes over the same.
What I claim is An ironing apparatus comprising a frame with suitable handle, presser rollers journaled one at each end of the frame, a stationary cylindrical furnace having tapering ends with exits therein, pipes connected to said tapering ends, a cylindrical ironing roller mounted about said furnace, grooved V13 8 about the circumference of the furnace, annular ribs upon the inner circumference of the ironing roller and guided in said ways, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOI-IN \VILLIE PHARROII.
I/Vitnesses M. B. FOWLER, CLYDE J. RUG/KER.
