To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, DE Wrrr D. WALKER, a c tizen of the United States, residing at Irvlngton, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hydrocarbon burner, and is especially designed for use in connection with stoves and like appliances.
It consists in the combination of parts and in details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1,.is a longitudinal section of my burner. Fig. 2, is a transverse section of same. Fig. 3, is a side elevation of false front.
It is the object of my invention to provide a device for burning hydrocarbon oil in 0011- nection with stoves and ranges, and certain improvements in the vaporizing and distributing of the product and in providing a sufficient supply of oxygen for its combust1on.
As shown in the drawings, A represents a pipe or tube of any suitable size for the purpose required, and this tube is supported horizontally within the stove or range, extending approximately from one side or near the center.
B is a false front which extends down- Wardly within the fire box portion and at the bottom is turned at substantially right angles so as to extend across and rest upon the grates of the fire box.
The vertical front portion has openings or slots cut in it as shown at 2, and the upper edge of each opening is pressed inwardly in a lunette form as shown, so as to provide a sort of arch over the openin which serves to deflect airwhich is admitted through these openings, downwardly and toward the pipe and burner.
Upon the inner end of the pipe A is fixed an elbow or equivalent bent portion 3, having in its upturned end a closing plug 4. Beneath this plug are inclined openings 5 so constructed as to allow jets of gas or vapor to be discharged therefrom, and the angle of the openings is such that these jets are thrown downwardly. The jet or jets which extend in the direction of the pipe A will thus discharge into contact with the pipe and will serve to heat it. Within the pipe is fitted a tube 6 which is of sullicient smaller size than the interior of the pipe to form a passage in the annular space. This tube may be plain and cylindrical, or it may be made with spiral grooves 7 extending around it from end to end. The outer end of the pipe has an end S, screw threaded to fit the end of the pipe or tee A.
9 is an opening for the admission of the hydrocarbon liquid. This portion may be properly formed by the use of a T-coupling which will screw upon the end of the pipe and thus provide for the opening 9, and the opening in which the screw-plug S is fitted.
The bottom B which is formed by the horizontal extension of the false front B may be depressed or slightly curved downwardly at a point approximately beneath the elbow 3 and thus form a recess or depression for the reception of a small quantity of the hydrocarbon which is placed therein and ignited so as to heat up the parts in readiness for continuing the operation.
The operation will thus be as follows z-The hydrocarbon being admitted under sufficient pressure through the passage 9, will be distributed around the plug 6 and between it and the inner periphery of the tube A, thus forming a thin sheet, which after the device is properly heated up will be vaporized as it passes along the tube, and when it reaches the discharge openings 5 will be delivered in jets which being ignited and supplied with air through the openings 2 will provide a very complete combustion and fill the fire place with a strong heating flame. This flame serves to heat the top of the stove and to be diverted around the oven by dampers in the usual or any suitable manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letter Patent is 1. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a tube extending horizontally into the fireplace said tube having its inner end upturned and closed and having said upturned portion provided with inclined oriiices adapted to deliver jets of gas or vapor downwardly upon the tube, a hydrocarbon supply pipe connecting with the opposite portion of the tube, and a plug within the tube and of less diameter than said tube whereby an annular heating passage is formed between the tube and plug, said plug having one end fixed to the tube and thence extend-,
ing across the end of the hydrocarbon supply pipe to a point near the upturned end of said tube.
2. A hydrocarbon burner comprisin a tube extending horizontally into the replace, and having an upturned elbow secured to its inner end, a tee-coupling to one branch of which the outer end of said tube is secured, a fluid supply pipe fitted to a second branch of the coupling, a plug within the tube and of less diameter than said tube, said plug having one end fixed to the remaining branch of the coupling and thence extending across the delivery end of the fluid supply pipe to a point proximate to the elbow, said elbow having orifices adapted to deliver jets of vapor or gas downward upon the tube, and a plug for closing the upper end of the elbow.
3. In a hydro-carbon burner, 21 horizon tally disposed tube extending into the lower part of the fire place having a closed outer endand an inner passage for the hydrocarbon liquid, a plug extending approximately from end to end within the tube and forming therewith a narrow annular channel for the passage of the liquid, an upturned elbow at the inner end of the tube, said sec tion having its upper end closed, inclined oppositely discharging jet openings located beneath the closed end, one of said openings adapted to deliver the inflammable gas against and along the line of the conducting pipe, a false front and bottom for the fire place, said front having inclined air inlet openings for causing a downward draft of air toward the burner pipe.
4. In a hydrocarbon burner, a fire place having a false front and bottom, said front being formed with lunette shaped openings adapted to deliver air inwardly and downwardly toward the bottom, a pipe extending horizontally above said bottom having an inlet at the outer end and an upwardly extending elbow at the inner end, said elbow having inclined jet passages oppositely located, one or more of said passages discharging in line with and against the horizontal tube, a plug extending approximately 1 through the horizontal portion of the tube j and forming therewith an annular channel 1 for the passage of the liquid in a thin sheet.
5. In a hydrocarbon burner, a fire place having a false front and bottom, a tube extending above said bottom having an inlet passage at the outer end, an upturned elbow at the inner end and jet openings in said elbow, a plug extending approximately the length of the horizontal tube section and forming therewith an annular channel for the passage of the hydrocarbon, said plug having an outer end formed with a portion which tube, and a closure for the outer end of the may be engaged so as to remove it from the tube and in line with the plug.
6. In a hydrocarbon burner, a tube extending horizontally into the fire place, having an inlet passage at the outer end, an upturned elbow at the inner end closed at the top and having an inclined jet passage contiguous to the closure, one or more of said passages discharging in line with and against the horizontal tube, a plug extending within the tube and forming therewith an annular spiral channel for the passage of hydrocarbon liquid, a false front for the fire place having lunette shaped openings for the admission and direction of air downwardly toward the tube, said front having a horizontal portion extending beneath the horizontal tube, said horizontal portion having a depression formed in it below the elbow of the pipe adapted to receive a combustible for the purpose of a preliminary heating of the apparatus.
