BRUSH FOR BOTTLE WASHING MAGINES.
PPLIOATION FILED MAB. 28, 1906.
UNITED STATESY PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIPP BOCH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1907.
Application filed March 28,1906. Serial N0. 308.507.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it kno n that I, PHILIPP BOCH, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the borough of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes for Bottle-I/Vashing' Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bottle-cleaning brushes such as used in bottle-washing machines, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a brush for this purpose which readily adapts itself to the interior of the bottle, whereby an efficient cleaning of such bottle may be effected.
The invention also aims to provide a device of this character embodying improved means for mounting the wipers forming the brush, and improved means for normally maintaining the same in contact with the interior surface of the bottle.
The invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, .in which the same reference characters denote the same parts throughout the several views, Figure l is a longitudinal section through a bottle-cleaning device constructed in accordance with the invention, said device being shown in position to be introduced into a bottle, Fig. 2 is a similar section showing the brush within the bottle, Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on line 3, 3, Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is an endelevation of the brush, Fig. 5 is a side-elevation, partly in section, of the brush and its adjunctive parts, Fig. 5EL is a section on line 5, 5, Fig. 5, Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of a modified construction of brush, Fig. 7 is a further modified form of the brush, and Fig. 7a is a section on line 7, 7, Fig. 7.
In the drawings, l) denotes a housing or sleeve which is provided at one end with an elastic head m and interior bushing m1 and screwed at the end opposite the head m to a tube b1. Disposed within and movable longitudinally with respect to the tube b1 and housing t is a spindle a, to which rotary motion may be imparted in any suitable manner. The spindle a has screwed thereto by means of a screw-plug al, as best shown in Fig. 5, a tubular end-section d. Said tubular section is provided at its free end with a guide-plate e which extends into the open end of said tubular section and is disposed diametrically thereto, as shown in Fig. 4, being secured within said section by means of small screws e3 passing through said section at either side into said plate. Said plate e is provided at its forward end with shoulders e2 which abut against the edges of the tubular section, and with a forwardly-.extending lug e, the function of which will be hereinafter pointed not.
The -plate e serves as a guide for a brushactuating shank g, which is made of U-shape and straddles said guide-plate, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6, the free ends of said shank being disposed toward the outer end of the tubular section d, while the parallel legs of said U-shaped shank t closely and slide against the guide-plate c at either face of the same. A helical spring d1 arranged within the tubular section d and abutting at one end against the shank g, serves to normally hold said shank in the position shown in Fig. 5, in which said shank protrudes slightly from the open end or mouth of the brush-supporting section d. The free ends of the shank g are provided with oppositely-inclined transverse edges g1 which impinge against inclined cam-edges]CX formed at the inner ends of wiper-holding arms f which are pivoted to the lug e4 of the guide-plate e at either side of the same, as shown in Fig. 4. The arms f have applied to the same, by means of small screws f1, wiper-holders f2 which embrace said arms, as shown in Fig. 5a, and clamp at their meeting edges the wipers 3, which are formed of elastic material and extend beyond the holders f2 at the ends and at the front edges of the same, as shown in Fig. 5. The spring d1 in normally holding the actuating-shank g in its forward position, causes the wipersf3 to project oppcsitely at right angles to the spindle d, by the action of the coperating edges g1, f constituting camportions of said shank and the respective wiper-arms.
In the modiiication shown in Fig. 6 the wipers, instead of being applied to the wiperarms by means of removable holders, are permanently secured directly. to the wiperarms f 5, which for this purpose are bifurc ated, as shown, and have the wipers retained within such bifurcations by means of rivets r.
Fig. 7 shows a brush which is used to clean bottles having deep convex bottoms. In this form the cam-edges of the actuatingshank gX extend at right angles to the latter normal position it will hold the wipers f at vss an obtuse angle to each other, and thereby conform at their forward edges to the bottom of the bottle, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 7. In order that the ends of the wipers may properly contact with the sidewall of the bottle, such ends are inclined with respect to the bodyeportion of said wipers. In this form, the wiper-arms f7, instead of being bifurcated at their ends, are formed of sheet-metal which is doubled upon itself and is clamped upon the wipers by means of rivets, as shown in Fig. 7a.
The operation of the improved bottlecleaning device is as follows: When the device is in its normal. position the parts are in the position shown in Fig. l, in which the Wipers of the brush are held parallel to each other by means of the bushing m1 within which said wipers are disposed. The bottle to be cleaned has its mouth placed against the head m of the housing and said housing is then pushed backwardly on the spindle a by forcing said bottle in the direction of the brush.V By reason of the movement of the bottle in this direction, the Wipers, which are held parallel to each other, pass through the mouth of the Abottle to the interior of the same, and as soon as said Wipers are disengaged from the wall of the bushing, the head fm, and the neck of the bottle, they spread, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and assume the position shown in full lines in said iigure, in which they extend at approximately right angles to the actuating-spindle at opposite sides of the same and contact at their outer ends with the inner surface of the bottle-wall. This movement of the wipers into expanded position is effected by the helical spring d1 which normally holds the actu atingshank g in extended position, in which osition its inclined ends act upon the inc ined cam-edges of the wiper-arms in such a manner as to force said arms into the position just indicated. When the wipers of the brush have assumed the position shown in Fig. 2, rotary motion is imparted in any suitable manner to the spindle c, and consequently to the brush. During the rotation of the brush the ends of vthe wipers constituting the same rotate in contact with the side-wall of the bottle and thereby thorougnly clean the same and as the bottle is reciprocated over said brush the interior of the former is thoroughly cleansed throughout its length, the forward edges of the wipers conforming to and cleaning the bottom of the bottle when such bottom is forced against the rotating brush during the manual reciprocation of the bottle. The brush may be made to rotate at comparatively great speed so that the thorough cleansing of the bottle is effected in a very short time, after which the bottle is withdrawn over the brush and the latter again confined within the housing. rIhe device is then ready for use upon another bottle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Iatent:
