INVENTOR BY awfimw ATTOR/VEK UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VICTOR LEATON OGI-IOA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO BENJAMIN A. JACKSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PEN OR PENCIL CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 3, 1906- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VICTOR LEATON OOHOA, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York and State of New York, have invented certain new-and useful Improvements in Pen or Pencil Clips, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom anying drawings.
y invention relates especially to devices employed for holding fountain pens, pencils,
thermometers, etc., in place in the vest pocket, 'When not in use, thus preventing accidental loss, breakage from dropping, or displacement through the stooping of the person, or when the garment is removed, and has for its object the provision of a simple, cheap and effective holder,- which will automatically engage the edge of the pocket when the pen or pencil .is placed therein, and which will readily adapt itself to any diameter of pen or pencil, and to any longitudinal position thereon.
To attain the desired end, my invention consists essentially in certain new and useful combinations or arrangements of parts, and eculiarities of construction, all of which will e hereinafter first fully described, and
then pointed out in the claim.
. In the drawing, Fi ure 1 is a side elevation of a holder embodylng my invention, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of thesame shown as applied to a fountain pen.
L1 e lettersof reference, wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Informing my improved holder, a loop of" piano wire, or the equivalent, is made by bending the wire, as at aa, and then bending the two extremities above the loop, com mencing with a sharp bend, b-b, spirally, in a plurality of convolutions ccc-c. en thus formed, the convolutions of the spring will embrace a pen, pencil, thermometer, or the equivalent, with sufiicient pressure to maintain any desired longitudinal osition thereon, and such convolutions wil adapt themselves to various diameters, as required. The downwardly-projecting tongue or loop will readily pass over the top of a pocket, such action being automatic when the pen or pencil is pushed down Within the pocket, and will permit the removal of the pen or pencil without any manipulation of the loop, and the device can be readily adjusted to any length of pen or pencil or moved as a pencil is shortened by use, in accordance with the depth of the ocket. As the loop is smooth, and formed 0 round material, the edge of the pocket will not become worn,or abraded.
Having now fully described my invention, What I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
As a new article of manufacture, a pen or pencil clip consisting of a loop of wire, the ooped portion bent to constitute a tongue, the remaining portions of the wire being wound to form a double spiral spring, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I hereto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
