sNvENTQa,
operate between the arms of the guide-standards fl so as to guide thc cutter-fratrie as a cut is heiner made by' its wire. 'l`he inner end of each spindle is formed with ahead 2t), which is provided at its end with an annular flange or disk-like portion 2] under which the cutter-wires 22 are passed. These cutter-Wires lie within notches 22% provided in the outer pcripheral portions of the head flanges 2l of the opposite spindles of a frame and have their ends passing inwardly diametrically across the inner faces of such flanged portions, the heads 2() of the spindles being cut away, as at 24, for such purpose, and secured to suitable securing means Z5 on the frame arms. The notch 23 of each spindle is disposed in the outer peripheral portion of its flange 2l relative to the associated frame arm and its depth is less than that of the radius of the flange, thus positioning the span of the cutter-wire at a greater radius from the cutter-wheel center than is the axis of the spindle 1G and guide-roller 1S, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. 'lhis positioning of tlre cutter-wires relative to the axis of the guiderollcrs 1S of the cutter-frames causes them to move ilmli'fferent planes as they descendand ascend between the arms of the guide-stainlards 9, the wire reaching a central point between the arms of a standard when at its limit of downward movement', as illustrated by the dotted lines .'r-z/ in Fig. 3. In order that the clay column 26 shall be given a square cut hy each cutter-wire as it passes therethrough on its descending movement the guide standards J are inclined forwardly at a suffity ient angle to the surface of the carrier-bars G of the associated carrier-seetions to compensat e for the angle described by the descent of a wire relative to a perpendicular during the cutting action, thus causing a wire to fol ow a perpendicular plane in its descent through the column and a plane at an angle to the cut end of the column on its descending movement7 which plane of ascent is in substantially the same position relative to the forward guide-arm as the plane of descent is to rear guide-arm of a standard, as represented by the lines r y in Fig. 3, the dotted line s thereof designating the central line of the standard. This feature of my invent'ion is of special importance to the operation and coi'istruction of In achine of this class due to the fact that a positive guiding of the cutter-wires in their descending and ascending movements through the clay-column is effected and the construction of the carrier is simpliiied and lightened. While in my former Letters Patent aforesaid the cutter-wires have been positively guided in their descending or cutting movements by the action of the guide-standards of' the carrier, there was no provision made for positively guiding the wires in their ascendingr movements after making a cut thereby rendering them liable to hound away from their supposed planes of movement and have contact with the surface .of the cut block or section Bti next ahead by positioning the wires as above described so that they have an angular movement outwardly from the column end as illustrated by the line lt/ in Fig. 3. W'ifth my improved construction the endless carrier is also made lighter due to the lightening of the guidestandards thereof over those heretofore used, thus requiring a less amount of power to move the carrier and operate the machine, which is of considerable importance in machines of this class.
The operation of myinvention is as follows: As the cutter-wire of a cutter-frame descends through the clav column 26 it is positively guided by the guide-stamlards 9, the inclination of which is sulicient to (annpensate for the angular movement of the wire relative to a perpemlicular plane duc to its being offset outwardly from the axes of the guide-rollers 1S of the cutter-frames, so that a rightangled eut of the column will be made. Un the con'ipletion of the cut, the carrier-section carrying the block thus severed is caused to tip slightly forward due to its passing upon a declined portion of the track 2, thus effecting a separation of the colitiguous block ends to form a space therebetween for the ascending Wire to pass through as shown in Fig. 1. As the. Wire ascends, its position relative to thc axes of the inde-rollers 18 causes it to move outwardly rom contact with the end of the succeeding block, as indicated by the dotted line y in Fig. 3, but not sufficiently to have contact with the end of the preceding block whereby to mar its surface, and it is positively guided in such ascending movement by the parallel arms of the associated guidestandards 9.
Having thus described. my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
l. ln combination, a revoluble cutterframe having guide-members at its extremities, a cutter-Wire carried by the cutterframe and off-set outwardly from the axes of the guiding-members, and an endless carrier comprising a plurality of pivotally connected sections each having a U-shaped guide standard inclined slightly from a perpendicular IIO and adapted to eieet a positive guiding n? the Cutter-wire both in its deseeniiing and ascending movements through a eolnnin.
2. In eombinat'ion, a reveluble cutterirame havingr guiderollers at its ends, a vutter-Wire carried by the cutter-frame and disposed at a greater radius from the axis of the cutter-frame than the axes of the guide-.rollers, and an endless carrier comprising a plurality of flexibly connected seetiens eaeh hav ing a U-shaped guide standard at either end lor cooperating with the guide-rollers, the upper terminals of which standards enrve outwardl)r to abut the terminal of the standard ol' the eontiguous seetion, said standards heine; slightly inclined from a perpendicular to eause the cutter-wire to follow a perpen dieular @ourse in its cutting movement and to move out of Contact with the column end in its ascending movement.
3, In combination a revoluhle cutterfraine, guide-rollers carried at its extremities, a earrier having guide-standards associated therewith to cooperate With the guide-reliefs of the frames to guide the frame extremities during a cutting and subsequent ascending movennent,i a Cutting element carried at the extremities of the cutter-frame and having a greater radius than that of the axes of the guide-rollers relative to the axis of the eutter-frame wherebv the cutting-element will have different pianes of movement when making a eut and ascending therefrom.
4. in combination a revoluhie cutteriraine, guide-rollers Carried thereby, a nutten wire carried by the cutter-frame and having a greater radins than that oi the axes of the guide-rollers relative to the axis of the eutter-fraine, and a carrier having members For cooperating with the guide-rollers of the frame to guide their Cutting and subsequent aseending movements, said nienihers heilig slightly inclined from a. perpemiienlar reliative to the earrier wherel'lv to ranse the eutter-wii'e to have a perpelulieular cutting movement and an angled aseending movement alter a eut.
5. The ennnbinatinn with a Carrier having guide-standar(is inclined from a perpendieie lar relative to the attaehed carrier-section, ol
a revolnble cutter having a piurality of at-V tached cutter-frames each carrying a cutterw'ire and guide-rollers 'for cooperating with the guide-standards of the carrier, said eutter-Wires having dillerent radii than the axes of the gnidemollers relative to the axes of the (stutter, Wl'ierehy the eutter-wires have anguiar descending and ascending movements when nia-king a eut.
6. The eornlnation with a carrier having guide-standards provided with spaced parallel guide-arms, of a revoluble cutter earry inq a plurality of U-shaped entier-frames, a spnide lined at the end of eaeh freine arm and having its inner end formed with a flange provided with an outwardly dis )esed notch the depth of which is less than the radius of the iange, a guide-roller carried by eaeh spindle to cooperate With the guide-standards of the carrier, and a cutter-Wire spannin r each eutter-i'rame and engaging the note ies in the associated spindles whereinr it is offset from the axes of the guide-rollers, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof i have hereunto signed my naine to this speeiieation in the l presenee of two subscribing Witnesses.
