Description
No. 853.272. PATENTED MAY 14, 190% T. w. s'ronnau. 1) I CATCH. APPLIUAT .LED 1350.13,].906.
THOMAS W. STODDEN, OF HANCOCK, MICHIGAN.
DOOR-CATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1907.
Application filed December 13, 1906. Serial No. 347,692.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. SToDDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hancock, in the county of Houghton and .State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Catches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door catches and the object of my improvements is to provide a construction giving a high efficiency at a moderate cost.
In the drawingFigure 1. is a horizontal sectional view of my door catch in operative position, the dotted lines indicating the door in open position: Fig. 2 is fragmentary view of the edge of a door with a portion of my invention attached thereto: Fig. 3 a fragmentary view of a door frame having a portion of my door catch attached thereto: Fig. 4 a detail view of a portion of my door catch; and Fig. 5 a perspective view of a spring employed in my door catch.
Referring to the drawing in detail the reference numeral 6 represents a fragment of free edge of a door. Secured to the edge of said door by means of screws 7 is a metal plate 8 provided with a stud 9 the purpose of which will soon appear.
The reference numeral 10 represents a portion of the lower frame. Secured to said frame by means of screws 1 1 is a metal frame 12. Secured to the outer face of said frame by means of the screws 11 is a face plate 13. Arranged within the frame 12 is a spring 14 which is held in place by means of the face plate 13. I
After the portions of my door catch have been properly secured to the door and door frame as shown and described, the operation is as follows. When the door is closed the stud 9 enters the open or outer end of the frame 12 and passes between and is frictionally engaged by the opposite sides of the spring 14 which being yielding, allows the stud to pass through to the opposite end of the frame 12 where it is held in place by means of the spring which latter prevents the stud from passing out of the frame eX- cept when pulled on with sufficient force to spread the spring.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a door catch, a metal frame for connection with a door frame, a metal spring arranged in said frame and having portions of its opposite sides curved inwardly, means for holding the spring in position, and a plate for connection with the edge of a door and having a portion for engagement with the curved portions of the spring.
2; In a door catch, a metal frame adapted to be secured to a door frame and having one end and side open, a U-shaped metal spring arranged in said frame and having portions of its opposite sides curved inwardly, a U- shaped face plate secured to the open side of the frame for holding the spring in place, and a plate adapted to be secured to the edge of the door and having a stud adapted to enter the open end of the metal frame and pass be tween and frictionally engage the curved portions of the spring.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS W. STODDEN. Witnesses:
