Description
PATENTED APR. 30, 1907* R. 0. 31mm. PLOW JOINTBR.
APPLIUATION FILED NOV. 3,1906.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PLOW-JOINTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed November 3, 1906. Serial No. 341,932.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROY C. SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at East Germantown, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plow-Jointers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in plow jointers, comprehending specifically a jointer of the disk type adapted for adjustable connection with the plow beam.
The main object of the present invention resides in the production of a disk jointer so mounted with relation to the plow beam as to permit any and all relative adjustments of the jointer, the construction providing a simple means for locking the jointer in any particular position to which it may be adjusted.
The invention consists in the certain details of construction which will be fully described in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the application of my improved jointer to a plow. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the jointer removed. Fig. 3 is a broken elevation viewed from the side opposite that shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a broken perspective illustrating particularly the adjustment lock for the disk standard. Fig. 5 is'an enlarged section on line 55 of Fig. 2. on line 66 of Fig. 3.
Referring particularly to the drawings, wherein similar reference numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, my improved jointer comprises a disk cutter 1, a disk standard 2, and a supporting or hanger bar 3.
The means of connection between the standard 2 and the disk is clearly illustrated in Fig. 6, wherein it will be seen that the disk is provided with a central opening 4 within which is fitted a casting 5 having a head 6 of rounded contour .and of greater diameter than the diameter of the disk opening, the head being formed with an integral projection 7 fitting within the disk opening and centrally formed with a rounded depression 8. The casting is inserted within the opening 4 from the inner or concave side of the disk, the length of the projection '7 equaling the thickness of the disk at this point. A clamping plate 9 is arranged for cooperation of the Fig. 6 is a sectiondisk with the casting being formed with a rounded projection 10 to fit within the recess 8 within the casting. The opposing side edges of the plate are formed with laterally extending flanges 11 between which the lower end of the standard 2 is inserted. The plate 9 is positioned by inserting the projection 10 within the recess in the casting, the surface of the plate being shaped to conform to and bear against the convex side of the disk. A securing bolt 12 is passed through the standard 2, projection 10, and casting 5, securing the parts together in a substantial manner.
The relatively upper portion of the standard 2 is twisted from the normal plane of the standard to provide a section 13 arranged in a plane slightly inclined from the normal plane of the standard. The relatively outer face, or that face opposite or remote from the disk, of the portion 13 of the standard, is of rounded contour in section, as shown at 14, in Fig. 5. The lower portion of the hanger 3 is arranged to receive and cooperate with the portion 13 of the standard, being for this purpose of arcuate shape, as at 16, the curvature corresponding to the curvature 15 of the portion 13 of the standard. A securing bolt 17 is passed through the section 13 of the standard, and extends through a transversely arranged slot 18 in the section 16 of the hanger.
A locking washer 19 is secured upon the end of the bolt 17 beyond the face of the hanger, said washer being formed with a vertically extending lip 20 having at its relatively upper edge one or more inwardly projecting pins 21. The face of the section 16 of the hanger is formed with a series of transversely alined openings 22, so disposed relative to the slot 18 that the pins 21 of the washer may cooperate with said openings in the various adjustments of the disk standard. The end of the bolt beyond the washer is provided with the usual securing nut 23.
In the adjustment of the disk standard relative to the hanger the nut 23 is loosened, the washer, pins 21 disengaged from the then occupied openings, and the disk swung laterallyin either direction to the desired position. The disk pins are engaged with the openings 22 then presented in. alin einent with said pins and the nut 23 tightened to secure the parts in the new position. The washer 19 thus acts as a lock to secure the standard against inde endent movement after adjustment, as will be obvious.
The hanger 3 is secured to the beam 24 of a plow or similar implement in any approved manner, preferably through the medium of a clip 25 so constructed as to permit the ready adjustment of the hanger vertically and longitudinally as respects the beam.
The construction described provides a substantial bearing and connection between the disk and disk standard, such connection requiring as a substantial holding means, the use of but a single bolt; the connection between the disk standard and. hanger is readily adjustable, the construction including a locking means for securing the standard in adjusted position; and the use of the disk jointer effectively cuts all vines, roots and weeds in the path of the plow and easily turns the soil in advance of the plow.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
A disk jointer comprising a disk, a disk standard, a casting fitting an opening centrally formed in the disk and bearing against the inner side of the disk, said casting being formed with a rounded depression, a clamp plate conforming to and bearing against the outer side of the disk, said plate being formed with a projection to fit within the depression in the casting and with edge flanges to embrace the standard, and a bolt passed through the standard, clamp plate and casting.
In testimony whereof, Iv afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
