INK-WELL.
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, JAMES W. JACOBUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Great Neck, county of Nassau, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkells, of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to ink-wells, and particularly for school-desks. Such ink-wells are often subject to very careless and rough usage and must satisfy a great many conditions some of which are antagonistic to each other. They must be cheap, durable, easily installed, small in external dimensions, but of substantial capacity. They must prevent evaporation, exclude dirt, dust, and other.
foreign particles, prevent application of an excess of ink to the pen, prevent children from sticking their fingers in the ink, and must be easy to clean and fill. It is my object tofulfil these conditions.
The invention consists in the practical embodiment of the principles hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying single sheet of drawings.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a fragment of a desk with an ink-well of my invention installed. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the body of the ink-well, taken on the plane of the line as :13, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail side elevation of the tube which forms a vertical extension of the mouth of the well.
The desk-top 1 is provided with a circular opening. having an annular shoulder 2 for supporting the ink-well. The nk-well body 3, semicylindrical in form, is preferably formed of a single integral wall of glass having a laterally-projecting flange 4 at the upper end, adapted to be supported by shoulder 2. At an opening or mouth 6 in its upper Wall; The upper wall 7 of the body is preferably arched slightly. The ink-holding reservoir will thus be seen to have only a small opening at one side. The reservoir may be readily filled through this 0 ening when the Well is tipped on its side. en upright in its normal position of use, the ink cannot rise above the lower edge of the mouth-opening 6, since the reservoir is otherwise absolutely air-tight. The depth of ink beneath mouth 6 is just sufficient to properly supply an ordinary pen.
To protect the upper part of the well, I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 28, 1906. Serial No. 345,426.
the base is a lateral extension 5, with Patented April 16, 1907.
prefer to provide a top having a central disk portion 8, a slightly-raised guard-rim 9, a reinforcin depending flange 10, and an inturned ange 11, gripping the body-flange 4 and securing the top permanently to the body. In the top is an opening or mouth preferably having the depending flange 12, located directly above the mouth 6 of the well and through which the pen may be dipped.
Upward from mouth 6 extends tube 13, preferably made of hard rubber or other suitable non-corrodable composition. The upper end of this tube is positioned by the top flange '12. This tube in the form shown has its lower end inserted in mouth 6, so as to prevent eva ioration or incursion of dirt at this point. t is removable, so that the well may be more easily filled. The ink cannot rise into the tube abovethe mouth 6 of the body. The internal diameter of the tube is preferably only sufficiently large to admit an ordinary pen.
The arched cover 14 is pivoted at 15 to the top disk 8 and is provided with an opening 16 adapted to re ister with tube 13 when the well is in use. E1 the position shown, how ever, the cover is in the closed position, and neither evaporation or entrance of dirt can take place. Its arch form renders it more easy of operation. The entire construction when installed is preferably flush with the top of the desk.
In the ,form shown the tube is the only part likely to be lost or injured, and its cost is very small. It will be apparent that the tube might be a permanent part of the well; but this entails special provision for filling, and I reserve the right to file a separate application therefor.
What Iclaim is 1. An ink-well comprising, an integral body portion, semicylindrical in form, and having a laterally-projecting flange adjacent the top and having a laterally-projectin integral extension at thebase provided wit an upwardly-opening mouth, said mouth being but slightly larger than necessary to admit an ordinary pen and said extension beneath the lower edge of said mouth being only deep enough to supply the pen with ink.
-well comprising an integral a size and elevated above the bottom a distance only sufficient to permit the dip of an ordinary pen.
3. An ink-well comprising an integral body permanently closed at the top and at the bottom and having only one opening at one side near the bottom and a removable tube extending upwardly from said opening substantially to the line of the top of the body and of suflieient internal diameter to permit dipping an ordinary pen to the bottom of the body. i
4. An ink-well comprising a body having a laterally-projecting flange adjacent the upper end, an integral laterally-projecting extension at the base, an upwardly-projecting I tubular extension from said laterally-projecting extension and a protecting-top.
5. An ink-well colrprising, a body closed at the top and having a mouth at one side adjacent the base and a permanently-attached protecting-top projecting laterally of said body.
6. An ink-well comprising, a body closed at the top and having a niouth at one side adjacent the bottom, a removable tubular extension mounted in said ITOUth and a pro teeting top member for said body and said tubular extension.
7. An ink-well comprising, a body having a mouth at one side near the base, a protecting-top having an opening over said mouth and a tubular member extending upwardly from said mouth and removable through said opening.
'8; An ink-well comprising, a body having a mouth near the bottom, a protecting-top having an opening above said mouth, and a rotary cover having an opening adapted to ing an opening above said body-opening and a rotary cover having an opening adapted to register with said top opening.
