To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM HENRY SIM- MONS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the borough of the BronX, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Markers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of dressmakers appliances known as skirtmarkers, and my improvement consists in means enabling the marker employed to be conveniently applied in a desired horizontal plane to a skirt or the like, whereby said marker may be caused to leave an indication in the plaits and folds thereof while the wearer is standing upon the marking-stool.

My invention further includes the novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be specifically described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings accompanying this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved apparatus, showing the lower portion of a figure standing thereon and a skirt to be marked. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the apparatus. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a plan view, partly in section, of a carrier-ring and a modified form of horizontal markerholder fitted therein.

In said figures the letter A indicates the base of a stool or stand having legs a and capable of supporting the weight of a person. Said stand is provided with an upwardly-extending portion or hub a', which is circular inform and whose periphery serves as a bearing for a rotatable marker-carrier. Said carrier consists of a ring B, having a radial arm or carrier member b. The ring B fits rotatably over the hub a. A plate C, having an annular depending portion c, fits thereby upon the upper surface of hub a and has an annular recess c in its under portion to afford a clearance for the ring B to permit the latter to be rotated. Upon said plate C is superimposed a support, as D, which may be in the form of a circular block of wood. A bolt E passes through the support D, plate O, and stand A, being secured by a nut d, as shown, or otherwise.

The arm b is in the form of a socket, adapted to slidably receive and hold a horizontal member d', upon which is placed a slidepiece d2. Carried by said slide-piece d2 in a vertical position is a stem or rod F, having a collar f, which, with set-screw j", is adjustable vertically upon said rod. The rod F also carries a chalk-holder G, having -a piece of chalk g, sai'd holder being supported on the collar f in the desired horizontal plane and being capable of movement both vertically upon and circularly about said rod.

In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the arm l) of ring B is seen to be provided with lateral slots b', while the horizontal member H, which, like the member d', is adapted to slidably carry the slide-piece d, is provided with the spring-tines h, separated from each other and having outwardly-turned ends 7L. To connect said member H with the socket b, the tines h are contracted, and thereby enter within said socket, said tines expanding as their bent ends 7L enter the slots b to thereby localize the member H and maintain it in its supported position.

In the operation of my improved apparatus the person being fitted with a skirt or the like stands upon its stool D and is not required to turn about or be turned about by said stool in the process of marking the different measurements upon the skirt. Instead the ring-holder B, which is free to rotate, is swung around upon the hub a', carrying with it the rod F, chalk-holder, and chalk. Thus a circular line may be marked about the skirt by rotating said ring. It is desirablein performing such marking with chalk that the plaits and folds hang naturally and are not disturbed in the marking process. 'Ihe operation of marking within said folds and plaits without disturbing them is performed by sliding the slide-piece (Z2 in and out upon horizontal member d, and in producing the mark with the chalk holder G is swung by the operator upon stem F. In order to set the chalk at the desired height upon stem F, its supporting-collar f is adjusted vertically, a scale upon stem F enabling said adjustment to be regulated as desired.

I claim- A marking apparatus comprising a base having an upwardly-extending hub, a carrier-ring rotatable about said hub, said ring having a socket portion, a stand supported IOO upon-said base out of frictional Contact with said ring; a non-adjustable horizontal membei removably fitting in said socket, a Vertical rod adjustably carried by said horizontal member, a chalk-holder revoluble about said rod, and a supporting-collar adjustable upon said rod, for said chalk-holder.
