Description
THO. 848,032. I PATENTED MAR. 26, 19071 m1. HERMAN".
DOUGHE GOT.
APPLICATION FILED P33. 6, 1906.
JAMES H. HERMAN, OF AMBRIDGE, PENNSYLVANIA.
DOUCHE-COT- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 26, 1907.
Application filed February 6, 1966. Serial No. 299,846.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES H. HERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ambridge, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Douche-Cots, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to folding cots particularly adapted to be used by physicians and others in administering hot or cold douches and injections of water or medicants to patients, one of the objects being to pro vide a device of the character described that shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, convenient, durable, and by means of which douches may be administered by a person without the assistance of others and while in a comfortable and reclining position administering same in the ordinary wellknown manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a douche-cot handy and convenient for household or family use and that can be folded into compact form and stored away when not in use.
Other objects and advantages of my invention, as well as the structural features by means of which these objects are attained, will be made clear by an examination of the specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference-numerals indicate corresponding portions throughout, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete device, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on lines 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on lines 3 3 of Fig. 2.
1 designates the frame, which is preferably rectangular in form and supported by the forward legs or supports 2 and the rear legs or supports 4:. These legs or supports are pivotally mounted on the frame 1 by means of a shaft 5, having its ends pivotally mounted in openings 6 in the side bars 7 of the frame.
' Braces 7 are employed for the purposes of giving additional strength to these legs or supports, and the rear legs are adapted when the cot is in operative position to bear against a cross-bar 8, secured 1n any suitable manner to the bottom of the frame 1, which affords means for holding said legs at the proper angle to enable them to rest squarely on the floor, the bottoms of all the legs being cut at oblique angles, as shown, and the forward legs being shorter than those in the rear to.
suitably incline the cot, so that the person using same may rest in an inclined position while using the cot and in order to permit the water to flow into the douche-pan hereinafter mentioned.
A portion of the upper side of the frame extending toward the rear is preferably covered with some soft and yielding material, such as is used in upholstering couchessuch as canvas, leather, and the like, as shown at 9and provided with a depression 10 for the reception of the hips of the person using the same, while the remainder of the covering is preferably comprised of rubber, oilcloth, or some similar waterproof material, the same being concave, as shown at 11, to incline in all directions toward a central opening 12 in order that the water may flow freely into said opening.
Connecting the two sides of the frame and having its top flush with the top thereof is a cross-beam 13, which operates to support the covering at a point slightly in the rear of the opening 12 and has a depression 10 corre sponding to the depression 10 in the cover. Beneath this opening is placed a douche-pan 14 or other receptacle for the reception of the water, and in order to avoid splashing I prefer to provide a conical chute 15, having its lower end just above the surface of or leading into said douche-pan. On one side of the frame 1 is pivotally mounted a standard 16, provided with an inclined notch 17, leaving a shoulder 18 At or near the top of this standard a hook 19 is secured. Pivoted on the frame, as shown at 20, is a brace 21, the free end of which engages the standard in such manner that it rests against the shoulder and holds said standard at. an oblique angle with the frame. Carried by the hook 19 is a water-bag 22, having a hose 23 leading from an opening in the bottom thereof, and by means of this hose to the free end of which may be secured any of the well-known spraying or douche devices.
Near the rear end of the frame is secured a hook 24, which serves as a rest for the standard 16 when the cot is folded or out of use.
It is thought from the foregoing that the construction and operation of my invention will be obvious and that further explanation is not necessary.
While I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of my device, it is obvious that minor changes may be made in the proportion, construction, and arrangement of parts. Such changes come well within the scope and spirit of my invention as disclosed and claimed, and I do not, therefore, desire to be restricted to the precise construction and arrangement shown.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The herein-described douche-cot comi prising a frame consisting of rigid side bars connected by end bars, front and rear pairs of foldable legs for supporting said frame in an inclined position, flexible covering for said frame having its surrounding edge attached to the side and end bars of said frame, said covering consisting of a rear section of fabric and a front section of waterproof material, the adjacent transverse edges of the two sections of said covering being united, said covering also having near its forward portion a concave depression and an aperture arranged in the bottom of said depression, and a transverse bar connecting and bracing the side bars of said frame and having its top formed with a depression to receive and support the depressed or concave portion of said cover ing, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described douche-cot comprising a frame consisting of side bars connected by end bars, a suitable covering on said frame, foldable legs for supporting said frame, a supporting-standard pivoted at its inner or lower end upon the outer side of one of said side bars and formed with a V-shaped notch arranged intermediate its ends, a brace-bar pivoted at one of its ends upon the lastanentioned side bar of the frame and having a beveled or tapered end adapted to enter said V-shaped notch to support the standard in an upright position, a supportinghool( upon the upper end of said standard, and a hook arranged upon the last-mentioned side bar of the frame and adapted to support the free end of said standard when the latter is folded down parallel with the frame, su l stantially as shown and described.
In testin'iony whereof ll hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES ll. HERMAN.
