SHOW-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 12, 1907.
Application filed March 17,1906. Serial No. 306,638.
To all Ih'hO'I'II/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, HADLEY H. SHELDON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Al bion, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Show-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to show-cases, the object of the invention being to provide counterbalance and operating mechanism for the sashes ofshowcases, whereby the operator standing in rear of the show-case may operate the front sashes thereof, so as to display the goods contained therein and render them accessible.
IVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front perspective view of a show-case embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with the top of the case removed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail vertical longitudinal section through the rear portion of the case. Fig. 4 is also a detail vertical section taken at right angles to Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of one of the counterbalance-weights, showing the handle thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates an ordinary showcase provided at the front with vertically-sliding sashes 2, adapted to be moved upward and downward for closing the case and opening the same to display the goods and render the same accessible.
In order to provide for operating said sashes from the rear of the show-case, the case is constructed with a vertically-extending box or compartment 3, located at the rear thereof, as shown in Fig. 2, within which suitable counterbalance-weights 4 and 5 are arranged to move up and down. One of said weights is used for each sash and is provided at the top with a pulley-wheel 6, around which runs a cord or cable 7, one branch of which extends upward over a guide-pulley 8 and thence forward over another guide-pulley 9, connected with the front post 10 of the case, the extremity of said branch of the cord being connected to one of the upper corners of the sash. The other branch of the cord or cable extends upward over a guide-pulley 11 and thence longitudinally of the back of the case around a guide-pulley 12, thence forward over a guide-pulley 13 and downward,
Where it connects to the opposite upper corner of the sash, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The weight 4 is just sufficient to counterbalance the sash which it controls and is provided with a projecting handle 14, having a reduced shank 15, which works up and down in a slot 16 in the rear of the case, as shown in Fig. 4.
It will be understood that each of the sliding sashes 2 is equipped with a weight and the connections hereinabove particularly described, and each of the weights is provided with an operating-handle 14. To elevate or lower any particular sash, the operator grasps the handle 14 connected with that particular sash, and by moving said handle and the weight carried thereby up or down he is able to correspondingly raise or lower the sash while standing in rear of the case.
The improvement described will be found 9 of great convenience in stores and will save considerable time and labor in displaying and rendering accessible the goods contained within the case.
I clain1- The herein-described show-case provided with sliding sashes at the front side thereof, in combination with counterbalanceweights, a box or compartment at the rear side of the case, a cord or cable connected to each weight and connected to the sash at the opposite upper corners thereof and extending over guidepulleys and passing around a pulley carried by each weight, handles connected to the weights, said handles extending through a slot in the case for moving said weights up and down within said box or compartment for raising and lowering the sash.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HADLEY H. SHELDON.
