GUILLIAM H. CLAMER AND CHARLES F. HOPKINS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENN- PENNSYLVANIA.
COMPANY, A CORPORATION or V RAILWAY JOURNAL-BEARING.
Specification. of Letters Patent.-
Patented March 5, 1907.
Application filed August 31, 1,906. SerialNo. 332,785.
Be it lm'own that we, GUILLIAM H. CLAME and CHARLES F..HOPKINS, both citizens of the United States, and residing in the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State'of Pennsylvania, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Journal-Bearings, of which the following is a' specification.
it is inade, both'being coordinately impor'-' tant; and. the object of the invention is to 'provide a hearing which shall be light and therefore comparatively inexpensive, ,yet
possessed of suflicient mechanical strength licable or cooperation andwhich-shall be a with the American, aster OarBuilders.Association present standard box and wedge.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of our inventionw'ill be more fully understood from the following description, taken inconnection with the-accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in Which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of a journal-box and contained parts embodying features of the invention. Fig. 2 is, a top or plan view of a bearing detached from the journal-box and embodying features of the invention. Fi .3 is a side elevational View ig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2; and Fig.
5 isa sectional view, on a reduced scale,-of the Wedge. g
Internally the form of the bearing is semicylindrical, as 'at l, and externall. the form of the bearing is semicylindrioa i as at 2. Upon the exterior of the bearingthere are arranged semipolygonal flanges, of which three are shown, one, 3, being arranged at one end,
another, 4, in the center, and the third, 5, at.
the other end. The three flat surfaces 6, 7, and 8 of these flanges, as well as the flat surface 9, of a longitudinally-ran ing centrallydisposed flange 10, impart to t e structure a generally semipolygonal back. The bearing is shownas provided with the usual upturned flange 11 and with lateral extensions 12.
The described bearing is constructed of mang'anese bronze or equivalentmetal, which is relatively very hard and strong, and. the bearing is internally faced-with a bearing metal, as lead or lead alloy, which is rela-,
tively' soft and weak.
The s aces between the rim and projectionslig ten the structure, so that comparatively little metal is required for making it, while at the same time the semipolygonal projections andthe lengthwise-ranging rib and the material em loyed not only impart sufficient mechanical strength to the structure, but also give it the shape or form and dimensions. requisite for mounting, fitting, and holding it betweenthe journal -14L and the superposed wedge 15, which is provided with a semipolygonal face and is arranged form prescribed as standard by the American Master Car-Builders Association.
Having jects of our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
A hearing consisting of metals whereof one is relatively weak and soft and the other is relatively strong and hard and comprising a insideofthe journal-b03016, which is of the thus described the nature and obsemicylindrical portion having uponits exterior semipolygonal projections arranged at and intermediate of its ends and having a centrally-disposed projecting rib, the upper faces of said rib and projections constituting a plain semipolygonal surface in combination with a journal-box for containing the bearing and with a wedge having a semipolygonal face and interposed between the ournal-boxand said semipolygonal surface,
substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto signed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
