Be it known that I, IRA ORvILLE WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residingat Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Draft and Bul ling Gear for Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to draft and hul'ling gear for cars, and has for its object the pro- Io vision of certain improvements upon the gear disclosed in .Letters Patent to Wright, Stem, and Farlow, under date of September 22, 1903, and numbered 739,769.
The invention consist-s incertain novelties of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
The accompanyingI drawings illustrate two examples of the physical embodiment of the improvement-s constructed according to the zo best modes I have so far devised for the practical application of the principle. l
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section .of Fig. 2, taken in a plane at one side of the draw-bar and follower-blocks. Fig. 2 is a z 5 half top plan view and a half horizontal sectional view through the follower-blocks and part of the draw-bar. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on line x a' of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 illustrates the second example by a view similar 3o t0 Fig. 2.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the numeral 1 designates the center sills of the car, being in-this instance steel channel-beams; 2, the draft-sills or supports of Z shape in crosssection and secured to the center sills by rivets; 3, the endsill; 4, the-body-bolster of any approved type; 5, a hole in the end sill for the passage of the draw-bar;` 6 6, two rear slots in the web of each draft-sill or support, both being of substantially the saire dimensions; 7, front elongated slots in each draft-sill or support; 8', the cheek-plates, each being cast with slots the slots in the draft-sills` which enter the slots in said sills, the said plates being secured in place by rivets, as shown; 9, the draw-bar with a coupler-head outside the end' sill; 10, a horizontal slot. in the draw-bar; 11, an opening at the rear end 5o of the draw-bar; 12, the front and rear follower-blocks of identical construction; 13,
rojeeting lugs one at the smaller end of each lock; 14, two projecting lugs at the larger corresponding to and with bosses end of each block which retain the springs in their proper positions; 15, horizontal slots through the blocks; 16, a plano-convex cast ing at the 'rear end of the rear follower-block, these-me being provided with a. hole to receive a lug 13 of a follower-block; 17, two coil or helical springs located, as shown, in a vertical plane between the blocks; 18, keys consisting cf flat metallic hars, each tapered at one end; 19, two draft-links, located as ,shown and united integrally or othciwise at their rear ends to for-In a U-shaped strap which bears against the plano-convex casting 16 at the end of the rear follower-block, and 20, three elongated slots in each draft-link.
It will be observed that when the parts are in their normal positions, as shown by Figs. 1 and 2, the keys pass through the draft-sills or supports, the slots in the links, and the slots in the follower-blocks and the draw-bar. The front key is located centrally of the front slots in the draft-sills or supports, and the two rear keys fit the slots so they cannot move longitudinally of the draft-sills. B reason of the elongatedI slots 15 in the fo lowerbloeks, which slots are wider than the width of the keys which loosely pass through them, the front block can move rearwardly in builng and the rear block forwardly in drawing. As the slots in t-he links are longer than the width of the keys, obviously in buffing the front key can move rearwardly within the slots, and in drawing the two rear elongated slots allow the links to he advanced and to move over the two rear keys.
In the iirst example the links do not move rearwardly at all in builing. In the second example (shown by Fig'. 4) the front key fits the front slots in thev links and the other slots are elongated at the left of the two rear keys, as indicated at 21, so that the links may move rearwardly in builing. The -introduction of this slight change in the mode of 0peration renders it necessary to form the rear follower-block and the plano-convex casting ltintegral, as shown at 22, or to secure the plano-convex casting to the links so it. will move with them 'l'he elements of the gear in F ig. 4 are in other respects the same as those shown by the iii'st example.
In practice slight modiiications in construction may be int reduced. For instance, the two links may be bent at their rear ends lOO IOS
or cast to shape and united by rivets or bolts, as shown at Z3 in Fig. 4. The slot 10 in the draw-bar may also be elongated, so that when the parts are in their normal relative ositions the slot will extend to the dotted ine 24 in Figs. 2 and 4. In this event the draw-bar in bu'l'ling can move rearwardly without imparting motion to the front key; but this construction is not as desirable as the arrangements of parts shown by the twoexamples in full lines. 1n both drawing and bulling it is desirable to transmit the strains to a multiplicity ol" separated points or areas, thus distributingfj the same. In the two examples it will be seen that in both the drawing and the bulling after the springs have been fully compressed the surplus energy or vis @im is transmitted to the draft-sills at six points or areas through the medium ot the three keys, This fact prevents the rupture of the '-'gear whieh frequently occurs when the strains are transmitted to two points only, as in the common construction of draft-rigging. l
The gear as shown ,ean of course be aplied to draft timbers or plates located beow the plane ol' the center sills, and I intend to embrace such applications within the scope ofthe claims.
What l claim isn 1. The combination iii a draft and buling gear provided with supports having slots, of a coupler and draw-bar; a Jfront slotted follower-block; a rear slotted follower-block; a spring. or springs between the blocks; slotted links which take the strains in drawing; and keys within the slots of the supports, links, follower-blocks, and draw-bar; the rear key being fixed in the supports, and the rear follower-bleek being movable relative to said key in drawing.
The combination in a draft and bulling gear provided with supports having slots, of a coupler and draw-bar; a front slotted fol lower-block; a rear slotted follower-block; a spring or springs between the bloeks; slotted links which take the strains in drawing; and keys within the slots of the supports, links, follower-blocks, and draw-bar; the rear key being iixedin the supports, the draw-bar and front follower-block being movable rearwardly in bulling, and the rear follower-block being movable in a forward,
direction in drawing.

The combination in a draft and buffing gear provided with supports having slots, of a coupler and draw-bar; a front slotted follower-block, a rear slotted follower-block; a spring or springs between the blocks; slot- .tedlinks which take the strains in drawin blocks being longer 1 keys within the slots of the supports,` link, and follower-blocks; and means for connecting the draw-bar with the front ends of the links; said links being united attheir rear ends, the follower-blocks being of identical construction and each having a projecting lug, and a recessed casting located between thcla rear follower-block and the ends of the lin ts.

The combination in a draft and buffing. gear provided with supports having slots, of a coupler and draw-bar; two slotted follower-blocks; a spring or springs; slotted links united at their rear ends to form a U- shaped strap; keys located within the slots of the supports, follower-blocks, and links; and means for connecting the draw-bar with the links.
15. The combination in a draft and buffing gear provided with supports having slots, of a coupler and slotted draw-bar; slotted follower-blocks; a spring or springs; slotted links united at'their rear ends to form a U- shaped strap, and keys within the slots of the upports, hnks, follower-blocks,` and drawiar.
16. The combination in a draft and butiing gear having supports with slots, of a coupler and. draw-bar; two slotted followerblocks; two keys within the slots of the supports and the slots of the follower-blocks; and a U-shaped strap connecting the coupler with. the rear follower-block; said keys being `tapered so that when the follower-blocks and spring or springs and one key are in place the other key can be driven into placeand compress the spring or springs.
