Description
guiml LE ROY B. WHEELER, OF MADISON,WISCONSIN.
Lmmrawnt No. s4,597,-dated December 1,1868.
The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and making part 'of the same.
To all'whom itl may concem:
Be it known that I, LE ROYB. WHEELER, ofthe city -of Madison, county'of Dane, and State of Wisconsin,
- thereon Figure l is a longitudinal section, and
Figure 2, a perspective view of my washing-machine,
the concave or hinged wash-board being raised in the latter -gure.
My invention consistsin the employment of a cylinder, on the outer surface of which is a rubber, made' of a series of tliangular pieces or stops, the smaller sides of each triangle being radial, or nearly so, with the cylinder, said stops or pieces being reversed on the opposite sides of the cylinder, in connection with a concave or set of rollers conta-ined in a hinged board resting on said cylinder, the latter'being provided with astring and button, for holding and alternating the clothes to be washed from one set of the angular pieces on the cylinder to the other, so as to wash thoroughly both sides of said garments.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the box, for the reception ofthe clothes to be washed, made in the usual manner, and supported on the legs L L. Y
P is acylinder, which has its bearings in the opposite sides of the box A, and is rotated in either direc-w tion by a crank, b', g. 2. y
The cylinder P has on its periphery triangular pieces or stops, 'a and b, which makeup the rubber. These stops have their smaller sides radial, or nearly so, withv the cylinder, and said stops or pieces are reversed on the opposite sides of the cylinder.
L is a hinged board, or concave, pivoted at m 1n to the longer sides of the box A, and having rollers, E E,
arian ged concentrically with the cylinder, which rollersfit over the cylinder when the concave is closed. The stops being obliquely inclined towards the concave, allow the concave to retain the garment, stop by stop. 8 is a string, passing over the outer surface of the cylinder in space 7, iig. 2, which string is fastened in its position by a button, or other equivalent means.
When it is thought desirable to rub both sides of a` garment, it is done by puttingone edge of the garment under the string 8, iig. 2, and alternating the garment from one side tothe other by turning the crank b.
Having thus fullydescribed my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ihe cylinder P, with the stops or triangular pieces a'b, constructed as desciibed, and providedv with string and button, for holding and alternating the clothes, so as to wash them on both sides, in combination with the concave or rollers E E, all constructed, arranged, and operated in the manner and for the 'purpose set forth.
