To all whom it meegaan/cern,.-
Be it known that. I, SvAN J. JAooBsoN, a
citizen oi' the United States, residing in ing had to the accompanying sheet of` drawings, illustra-ting the same and forming apart hereof, and in which- Figure l shows my sald deviceinside cle- Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal verticalsection of the same, the

Fig. 3 shows the same vertical 'section as Fig. 2 with kthe interior mechanismremoved, .showing the clear interior chamber and. the openings i i2 iii1 their 1g. 4 shows thelock part b removed-irom the part a in side elevation'. Fig; 5 shows a trans-l verse section ofFig. 1, taken, as shown, on
the cutting plane 5 5 of 2.. Fig. 6 shows said device m front elevation.
Aa transverse section of Fig. 1 as indicated by the cutting-plane 7 7 on Fig. 2.
Fig. 7 shows v thekeyc in side/elevation. Fig. 9 shows Fig. 8 in end elevation looking from the end parts c3 toward the further parts c4.' Fig. 10
shows a transverse section oi' Fig. 8 on the cutting planelOlO. 'Fig 11 shows a transverse section of thekey taken on the plane 10 10 of Fig.V 8in direction contrary to that indicated by the' arrow to said plane l10 10. Fig.- l2 shows the key in end elevation /as seen when looking at its inner end or that With-the arts c 68.'. Fig. 13 shows a fragment of iig. 5 showing the direction of the diagonally-placed entering and advancing ike reference letters denote' l like parts' throughout.
The object of my invention is to construct a padlock and key of such form'and design as will-not correspond with any of the known locks 'or their keys and which shall at the same time be most serviceable.
To attain said desirable ends, I construct myfsaid' new device'in substantially .the following manner', namely:
rl`he bodya is made, preferably, in the form oi' a dog, lion, or similar design, having anfinterior cavity d extending from the head Fig. 8 shows,
shouluersg g and near which passes a pin h, held in the sides, and in the front is an openthrough the rear end, atv which are' provided v ing consisting of an oblong horizontal part 'i and an oblong vertical part i', said parts being connected by a neck i2.
The bolt or removable part b consists of the block e2, which fits into and closes the rear end of the cavity d and of which the up'- per end is continued and forms the 'tail e,
which herein forms the hasp, of which the A .6s Said bolt consists, further, of the rigid barspoint passes through the holes a.'5 in the head.
e e integral with the part e2, butthi'nner, so as to leave shoulders g2 on each side, -which shall be flush with or slightlyA greater than the thickness of the springs jy" on each side of the bars e When said sprin s are held against said bars by the incoming ey c, as indicatedv by the broken outlines of said springs in Fig. 5, which said springs in their locking posiA tion abut with their free ends against the 752 shoulders g, and thereby prevent the withdrawal of the bolt bf The bolt b can be withdrawn by laying the springs f against the bars e, as shown in broken outlines in Fig. 5,
and this is accomplished by means of the key c, of which the end which performs said function consists of two spurs c3 and two spurs c, the latter being extensions of the edges of the sole or web c', and' the spurs cil consist f a single bar held centrally to the upper corner oi.' the Web. c. There is a slot e' between the bars e e, and into it the web c2 passes as the spurs c3 and c6 pass along on the outer faces o the-springs j' and'v lay them againstthe i sides of the bars e, and thus free the vends of the springs f from the shoulders g, and thereby iree the bolt '11 `from the part a. The
` transverse. pin h sto s the advancing .key c.
In applying the ey the end with the part c* ispassed into the slot i', the part c2 passing into the neck i", and the louter end of the key brought around until said foremost end passes out through the slot i. Thekey will then be in a. diagonal position to said parts, as shown in Fig.4 13,' in which it will be advanced until the parts-c3 ceenter the slot fi', after which the direction of the key will point with that shown in Fig. 8, and, as indicated, near its front end by a fragment of the front end of such a key in Fig. 5 with its spurs ca and c at their starting-point on the roo Q A l 845,358
springs ff, then advancing'said the f1 1ock until it has brought the springsf to the position parallel to the parts e, (indieeted in [o `into its lock.
'In Fig. 5 is shown e fragment of the enter-l ing end of the key in broken outlines, and j below it is shown a fragment of the opposite Ikey .end in broken outlines, its spurs c3' c@ x5 starting to disengage the free spring ends broken/lv outlines in Fig. 5,) and the look is-` 5' Open- The Combination with achamb'ered body' provided With shoulders g Tat one end and a ey-entranee consisting of two oblong openingsudisporsed .at right angles to each other and connected by a slot into a single opening at its opposite end, of e locl'ring-bolt consisting of a, head-'piece and bars v'shouldered et said headpiece, springs secured tosai'd bars,
end a transVersely-T-sheped and longitudinally-reoiproeable key provided4lat one end with sets of opposite spurs. f y
