GEORGE KILLIAN, OF SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
DETAOHlNG-CONE FOR IVIlNE AND OTHER ELEVATORS..
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 26, 1907.
Application filed April 27,1906. Seria1N0.314 -,O2Z.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE KILLIAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and I a resident of Scranton, county of Lacka-i wanna, State of Pennsylvania, have invented l certain new and useful Improvements in Detaching-Cones for Mine and other Elevators, of which the following is a full and clear specification, reference being had to the accomp anying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in sec tion, showing my invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation looking at the devices from another point; Fig. 8, a bottom view of the connec tion to the cage loop or hook, and Fig. l a detail perspective of one of the jaws connecting the cone to the cage-loop.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple safety device whereby the cage or car will be prevented from being carried up over the head-wheel in case of accident, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
T o the accomplishment of this object and such others as may hereinafter appear the I invention consists of the parts and combina tion of parts hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which the same reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings annexed, a designates the hoisting-rope, whose lower end is connected in the usual manner to the cone 1) of the coupling. Pivotally depending from ears on the cone are a pair of jaws c, which swing freely toward and from each other and are grooved in their inner or adjacent faces for the reception of the loop or hook at of the cage. These jaws are held together and in engagement with the loop of by means of a ring c, which is riveted to the depending parts of the jaws by soft-metal pins The ring 9 is stationarily supported on suitable framework at a point below the usual head-wheel, through which ring the hoistingrope passes. This ring is of a size to permit the cone to pass up through it. but to strike against the ring 6 in case the cage rises to an abnormal height. The contacting surfaces between the ring e and the ring 9 are preferably beveled, as shown.
sever the soft-metal pins f, thereby stripping off the ring 6 and releasing the aws 0. Upon the release of the jaws they will swing outward and. release the cage-loop d, thereby releasing the cage and preventing it being carried up over the head-wheel and causing loss of life and property. The cage will be prevented from descending by the usual safety dogs or pawls.
Another feature of importance lies in the fact that in attaching the hoisting-rope to the hollow cone the jaws 0 may be swung outward out of the way, thereby facilitating the securing of the lower end of the hoistingrope to the cone, the jaws being hung from the lower end of the cone and upon opposite sides of the vertical hole formed in the cone for the reception of the hoisting-rope.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various mechanical embodiments of the invention are possible and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact arrangement and construction shown.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the class. set forth, a hollow cone in which is adapted to be secured the lower end of the hoisting-cable, a pair of depending jaws pivotally attached to the lower end of the cone at opposite sides of the hole in the same, the lower ends of these jaws being adapted to swing outwardly and their inner faces being adapted to receive and engage the cage-hanger, a ring or band surrounding the jaws at their lower ends and serving to hold them in engagement with the cage-h anger, frangible pins fastening the ring to the jaws, in combination with a strippingring supported above and in line with said ring or band, for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 24th day of April, 1906.
GEO. KILLIAN.
Witnesses:
BENJ. A. CROWTHER, HARRY T. KILLIAN.
