Description

. QPATBNITED FEB. 12, 1907. I. M. MQWHORTER.
EARTH AUGER. APPLIOATION FILED mus, 190s.
:rnz NORRIS PETERS cal, WASHINGTON, u. c.
THOMAS M. MCWHORTER, OF BIG SPRING, TEXAS.
EARTH=AUGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 12, 1907.
Application filed July 9, 1906. Serial No. 325,366.
To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. Mo- IVHORTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Big Spring, in the county of Howard and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in specification.
My invention pertains to improvements in earth-angers.
It has for its object to increase or facilitate the action of the auger in agitating or loosening the bored earth for its effective removal and for preventing the choking of the auger, and to accomplish these ends in a simple, inexpensive, and ready manner.
Said invention consists of certain structural features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is an elevational view thereof. Fig. 2 is a cross-section viewing downward. Fig. 8 is a like section oppositely viewed, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the same.
In the disclosure of my invention I employ what is known as the ordinary earthsocket or tubular form of auger 1, having the usual longitudinal lateral opening 2, u ith its edges suitably tapered or beveled for aiding the removal of the earth in the boring operation, the bottom edge of said auger being beveled or sharpened, as at 3, and acting in the capacity of a bit for cutting or boring the earth.
A stout pin 4 is arranged to extend transversely through the tube or auger 1 contiguous to the cutting or bit end thereof, and fixed thereto by suitably passing it through apertures in the sides of said tube or auger and hammering down the ends of said pin from the outside upon the tube or auger.
In the use of the device the tube or auger during the boring operation is kept a ell sup- 5 plied n ith water by pouring the same from above thereinto, v hereby said pin vill produce a churning action upon the loosened earth, w hich latter it ill rise and be carried Earth-Angers, of which the following is a upward ith the water and be delivered or discharged therefrom in the usual way, and the interior of the auger thus be effectively prevented from becoming choked or clogged, as would otherwise be the case and as has been found by practical experience to take place in the use of this general style of auger.
In actual operation, u ith the use of this transverse pin the auger has been found to work perfectly free from choking or clogging and to provide for doingits 013k satisfactorily. 6o Said tool is adapted by the use of any wellknown form of coupling to be connected or coupled to the plunger-rod (not shown) commonly employed in connection therew ith for aiding in actuating it.
I claim A device of the character described, comprising an earth-socket, forming the auger proper, having a longitudinal lateral opening, a ith effective earth-removing edges, said earth-socket having its bottom edge adapted to form a bit and having arranged centrally therein, just above the plane of said beveled bottom edge a plain unequipped cross-pin.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS M. MOWHORTER.
