i M uw@ WILLIAM GILMORE, OFHUDSON CITY, NEW JERSEY.
Y Letters Patent N o. 84,350, (lated November 24, 1868. .l
IMPROVEMENT IN TEN'ONING--MAHINES- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the s'i'ame.
To all whom yit 'may concerny Be it known that I, WILLIAM Grnnonn, of Hudson City, in the'county of Hudson, and State ot' New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tenoning-Machine; and. I do hereby declare thatthe nying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved maf chine;
Figure 2, a front end of the same; and
Figure 3, a section of the sliding carriage and clamp, in the line :v :v of iig.- 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the framing of the machine. B, the table, on which the vertical carriagel C slide in ways arranged in a vertical position.
D is a vertically-reciprocating yoke, which carries the cutters E E, which are connected to the said yoke adjustably.
F is a treadle, .by which the cutter-gate or yoke is moved downward against the action of the springs.
The springs raise'the cutter-gate, and keep it in an elevated position',- when the pressure of the foot is taken o the treadle F. l
a is a vertical rod, arranged to slide loosely in the brackets a The lower end bears on the top of the cutter-gate, by which, and by the action of grati-tation, it receives a reciprocating motion, which it communicates to the pawl-lever d through'the medium of the wiper b. l
The paWl-arm (l carries a pawl, d1, Working into the rack on the top of the carriageand feeds it towards the cutters.
d is a holding-pawl,- whichA prevents the Work from being driven awayfrom the cutters by their action on it. v
c is a clamp, having a clamping-screw, c', by which the material, on which the -tenon is to be formed, is clamped to thel carriage, to be fed along to the cutters.
wherebyit may be raised or lowered on the same, to hold material of various sizes.
To operate-my improved n'lachin'e, a piece 'of tim ber is placed on the table and screwed` up against the carriage by the clamping-screw, the vcarriage being drawn back far enough for the said piece of timber to be fed up to the cutters the desired amount.
If the material be so thin as to' be too far towards the carriage to admit ofthe teun being formed at of wood may be interposed between it andthe face of thc carriage.
It is then clamped tightly' by the screw.
Y The knives are then adjusted to the proper position on the gate, and also to the proper distance apart, and the machine set in mot-ion by the application of the foot to the treadle F, by which the said timber is fed up to the cutters, and the tenon formed on both sides at the same time, as will be fully understood without further description.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination ofthe pawl-arm d, iv'ertically-slidin g rod a, and pawls d d2, with the vert-ical carriage C, all arranged and operating described, for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 18th day of February, 1868.
Witnesses: WILLIAM 'GILMORE WM. F. McNAMAnA, ALEX. F. ROBERTS.
` The said clamp is secured to thecarriage in a` slot,
the right distance from the face of the work, blocks
