Description

PATENTED FEB. 5, 1907.
W. B. LIGHTIG. WASHBOARD.
APPLICATION FILED AU'G.11.1906.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WllililAM BY LitllTlG. OF NEW YUh'h, N. Y.
WASHBOAHD.
Application filed August 11 1906. Serial No.
To a. (If/NH)! if may (IIIILULI'M: t Boit known that 1, Woman B. lncn'rio,a 1 citizen oi the l'nited States residing in New York, borough of Manhattan, county andi State of New York, have invented certain l new and useful lmproven'ients in Washl wards, of which th t'ollowing is a specilic'a- I tion. l This invention relalcs to washhoards. l The object ol the invention is to provide a l washboard embodying a rubbing derive i which exerts an ellieacious cleaning action on the articles to be washed and by which the holding oi such articles in the hands in order l to rub them on the board and the consequent i soaking of and injury to the hands is obviated.
With these ends in View the invention oon- 4 sists in the novel features and combinations 1 of parts to be hereinafter described and l claimed.
In the aeeompanying drawings, in which the same reference characters denote the. same or corresponding parts throughout. the several views, Figure l is a front elevation ot a washboard constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig 2 is a similar view, but i showing the rubln r-carrying l'rame swung back from the rubbing-surface ol' the board. Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal sertion on line I 3, Fig. I
[n the drawings, 1 indicates the washboard )roper, which is of the usual construction, having a rubbing-surface 1, covered with corrugated sheet metal. A rectangular frame 2 is hinged laterally to said board at one side oi the same in such a manner as to extend over the ruhhing-sin'tace I or to be swung back away iron: the from of the smne, as show u in l ig. 2.
3 denotes the hinges by which the frame 2 is applied to the wash ioard. Said frame embodies side pieces 4 which are provided at their inner faces with longitudinal grooves 5, as shown. These grooves are preferably provided with a sheet-metal lining 6. Crossstri is 7 are suitably secured at their ends in said grooves and constitute the upper and lower members of the irame 2.
The grooved side pieces 3 f H frame serve as guides for a rulihmg d re s. l his device is illustrated as consisting ol' a rectangular block having side llanges U, n latch enter 1 the grooves 5. lh' v'ruoves are made of] Specification of Letters Patent.

greater width than the thickness at the rubbing-block s so as to yield snllicientl to the thickness ol the clothes placed between the board and the block during the ruhhin o ieration. liy this means the rubber N is lrec V guided n upward and downward direction in the tramc 2. The rubber N is provided at its inner surl'arc with a nn-tallir corrugated rubbing-shrl'ace Hi, cot'iperatiug with and similar to that ol' the washboard proper. A handle ll is applied to the oppo ite l nct of the rubbing block.
"he operation ol' the tleyice is a follows: The lrame 2 being sw ung back l'rom the rub hing-surface ol' the washboarl as shown in Fig. 2 the article to be washed is placed on said-surface. 'lhe l'rame is then swung over said surl'acc, as shown in l ig. 1, so that the rubber 8 lies on the article. Said rubber is then rcciprocated in upward and downward direction while gradually pulling the article in upward direetion its handle ll being grasped by one hand or both. Such recipro cation causes an cllicacious and successive rubbing ol the entire article between the corrugat-ed rublnag-surfaces oi the board and the rubber. When the article is stillicientl clean, it is removed through the upper open portion of the frame, after which the next article is placed in position by opening the frame, lifted from the wnshtub onto the washboard, after whieh the guidi lraine, with the rubbing-block, is placed thereon, the article being then rubbed and removed through the upper part of the frame, and so on. The crossstrips 7 limit the movement of the tub her upwardly and downwardly.
A great. deal of pressure may be exerted on the article to be washed by means of the rubbingbloel-:. and this, together with the cooperative a tion of the two rnlthing-surfaces, produces, a thorough washing of the article with a minimum expenditure of energy and without necessitating the long-continued soaking of the hands in the suds.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to set are by Let ters Patent The combination, ith a washboard havvided with a. coriugatcd rulilting-surface and IOC guided in upward and d the app moves of the guid ed to said block, th plpces of the guigle-fra HENRY J. SUHRBIER.
