ELEVATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, FRANKLIN SHANNON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sloan, in the county of IVoodbury, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to grain-elevators, and more particularly to portable elevators, and has for its object to provide an elevator which may be transported from place to place and which will include, besides elevating mechanism, a platform arranged to receive a grain-wagon thereupon, and means also for dumping a wagon thus disposed to discharge its contents into the elevator proper.
Another object is to provide an elevator including a treadmill for operation thereof, said treadmill being located for operation by horses hitched to a wagon upon the wagonpl a'tform.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the present invention, a wagon being shown in dumping position thereupon. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the elevator, the wagon being removed. Fig. 3 is an end view showing the lifting mechanism at one side of the machine and showing it in its shifted position in dotted lines. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the elevator and conve; er folded. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on line 5 5 of Fig. 2, illustrating the mounting of the dumpbeams.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown an elevator comprising a horizontal wheeled frame 5, having inclines 6 and 7 at its forward and rearward ends, respectively, and each including a stationary upper section 8, secured to the frame, and a lower section 9, hinged to the upper section for movement to form a continuation thereof and to lie in engagement with the ground at times and to lie at times upon the section 8, and thus out of operative position.
At the rearward end of the frame there is a depending hopper 10, having a cover 11, arranged for movement into and out of operative position, and when in operative posi tion this cover lies flush with a platform 12, disposed upon the frame just forwardly of the hopper. Formed in the platform 12, ad j acent to the opposite sides thereof, there are a pair of longitudinall -extending parallel slots 13, and journaled transversely of each of these slots at the center thereof and below the platform there is a shaft 14, these shafts being mounted in brackets 15, located at opposite sides of their respective slots.
Mounted between their ends upon the shaft 14 there are a pair of dump-beams 16, the shafts being located 1'6tIW t1(ll of the centers of these beams, and the beams are arranged to lie normally within the slots 13 and in horizontal position, stops 17 being secured across the slots 13 therebeneath and at the forward portions thereof to prevent downward movement of the forward ends of the beams.
In the platform 12 forwardly of the beams 16 there is formed a longitudinally-extending central opening 18, in which there is located a treadntill 19, which slants upwardly and forwardly and which includes forward and rearward revoluble shafts 20 and 21, respectively, with which the belt 22 of the mill is engaged.
Journaled longitudinally beneath the frame in brackets A there is a shaft 23, connected, by means of bevel-gears B, with the shaft 21, and at its rearward end the shaft 23 carries a sprocket-wheel C. \Vithin the hopper 10 there is j ournaled a longitudinal shaft 24, which is in alinentent with the shaft 23.
Pivotally engaged at their lower ends with the shaft 24 there are a pair of spaced parallel uprights 26, connected at their upper ends by means of a revoluble shaft 27, and engaged with this shaft 27 and with the shaft 24 there are sprockets 28, which receive the chain 29 of an endless bucket-carrier 30, there being thus provided an elevating n echanism which is shiftable upon the shaft 24 to extend upwardly and laterally at either side of the machine.
The shaft 27 carries a sprocket D upon its forward end, and this sprocket is connected with the sprocket C by means of a chain E, this arrangement, by reason of the alinetiient of the shafts 23 and 24, peri'nitting of the lateral shifting of the elevator just mentioned.
The uprights 26 each include a pair of hinged sections, the outer section being foldable to rest upon the lower sections, and in Ice this way the elevating mechanism may be folded when the elevator is not in use.
In use the cover 11 of the hopper being in operative position a loaded Wagon is driven over the incline 7 to the platform 12 and is disposed with its wheels upon the beams 16, the horses standing upon the treadmill 19. The wagon is so disposed that the major portion of its weight lies rearwardly of the pivotpoint of the beams, so that when the latches 35 are moved out of operative position the rearward end of the wagon will tilt downwardly and its contents will be discharged into the hopper 10, the cover 11 having been moved out of operative position. The horses may then be started upon the treadmill, when the bucket-carrier 30 will be operated to elevate the matter discharged into the hopper 10 to a crib or other receptacle into which the elevator is disposed to discharge.
By reason of the fact that the elevator may be shifted laterally the mechanism is especially adapted for use in barns where it is desired to fill first one mow then another, as after one mow has been filled the elevator may be shifted to fill the other without changing the position of the machine.
What is claimed is- 1. In an elevator, the combination with a wheeled platform having longitudinal openings therein, of wheel-receiving beams pivoted between their ends in the openings for vertical movement, means for holding the forward ends of the beams against down ward movement, latches movable into and out of position to hold the rearward ends of the beams against downward movement,
said beams being arranged to receive the wheels of a wagon thereupon, a hopper at the rearward end of the platform and arranged to receive matter from awagon upon the beams, a treadmill located forwardly of the beams in position to receive thereupon the team of a wagon upon the beams, foldable inclines at the ends of the platform, an eleva tor located with its lower end in the hopper,
and operative connections between the treadmill and elevator.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a frame, of Wheels for the frame, foldable inclines at the ends of the frame, a platform mounted upon the frame, a hopper at the rearward end of the platform, said platform having longitudinallyspaced parallel slots therein, beams pivoted between their ends in the slots for vertical movement, means for preventing downward movement of the forward ends of the beams, latches arranged to lie at times in position to hold the rearward ends of the beams against downward movement, said beams being arranged for the reception of the wheels of a wagon thereupon and for downward movement of the rearward ends to position a wagon thus disposed for discharge of its contents into the hopper, a treadmill located in the frame in position to receive thereupon the team of a wagon on the beams, an elevating mechanism in the hopper, and operative connections between the treadmill and elevating mechanism.
