Description

No. 842,761. i PATENTED JAN. 29, 1907.
T. V. BUGKWALTBR.
FISHING REEL.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 9, 1906.
- Tia- Ta-ff A TTOHNEYS ATRACY VERE BUCKWALTER, OF ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, TRACY V. BUCKWAL- TER,a citizen of the United States, and a' ies'ident of Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Fishing-Reel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact desCriptiOn.
This invention relates to fishing-reels, and 1s especiallyv useful in connection with devices of this class adapted to be attached tol fishing-rods.
The object ofthe invention is to provide a reel of simple and strong construction and which permits the strain in winding the line upon the spool to be exerted in the plane of the longitudinal axis of the rod, and thus obviates a distortion of the same in the hand` of the operator.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, to be more fully described hereinafter and .particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in Whlch similar characters oi' reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a tnview of my invent1on as applied to a fis 'A g-rod. Fig. 2. is an elevation of the device, showing a part in crosssection. Fig. 3 is a lan view of the lower portion of the invention. F ig. 4 is apartial cross-section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. is an elevation of a modified form of the device, showing a part. in cross-section and Fig. 6 is a horizontal section of the modified form.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I employ a reel-body 1 of the usualform, havinga spool 2, pivotally mounted between side p1ates'3, which are joined by pillars 4. Secured to the lower portion of the reel-body is a'base-plate 5, having at an extremity lateral flanges 6, which are attached, by means of screws 7, to extensions 8 of one of the side plates 3. Angle-blocks 9 are attached to the base-plate 5 by means of rivets 10 and are adapted to be secured to the extensions 11 of thevotherside plate by means of screws 12. The base-plate 5 projects laterally beyond the reelbody and is provided with a hole fora purpose which will appear hereinafter.
I employ a reel cross-plate 13, which is adapted to be mounted upon the reel-seat 14a of a fishing-rod 14 and to be secured thereto by sliding rings 15, rwhich areadapted to be Specification of Letters Patent.

Eig. 5-
]?atented. Jan. 29, 1907.
vslipped over the curvedl ends 16 of the reel cross-plate. Rigidly attached to the reel cross-plate 13, near its center, is an upwardlyprojecting and threaded stud 17, which passes through the hole provided therefor in the base-plate 5. Iprovide a thumb-nut 18, which is adapted to screw onto the stud 17 and secure the base-plate 5 to the cross-plate 13. The cross-plate 13 is provided with ledges 19, which are rigidly mounted thereon bymeans of rivets 20 on each side of the baseplate 5. The inner edges of the ledges are at an angle with the edge of the base-plate 5 for a purpose to be described hereinafter.
By means of the extension of the baseplate it is possible to mount the reel upon the rod on one side of the longitudinal center line of the same, thus bringing the handle, by means of which the `reel is operated, directly over this center line, and when the handle isv turned the strain incident to this turning is brought to bear directly downward upon the rod and not to one side of the same, with a consequent tendency to twist the rod in the hand of the user.
It will be understood that in order to have the line wind smoothlvu on the spoolot the reel the direction oi' the ine should. be at an obtuse angle with the axis of the reel. In order to accomplish this, when'the reel is loflset as described above I attach the saine to the rod in such a manner that the axes of the reel and of the rod are at an angle with one another, as most clearly shown in Eig. l, and the axes of the reel and of the rod will intersect at a point approximately near the first line-guide 21 of the rod. That the reel may be set at any suitable angle with the rod the sides of the ledges 19 of the cross-plate 13 slope outwardly, and, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3, the base-plate vmay be thus secured to the cross-plate at any desired angle by tightly screwing down the thumbnut 18.
In order that the reel maybe used on the upper side as well as the under side of the rod, it is necessary that the base-plate be set at an angle with the cross-plate in a relatively forward as well' as a backward position, according to Fig. 3, which shows the baseplate when the reel is to be used on theupper side of the rod.' If it is to be used on the under side of the rod, the reel can be reversed andthe base-plate set at an opposite angle, and the sides ot the base-plate will then be in contact with those portions of the inner edges lOO IIO
of the stops Whichslope in the other direction.
In the modiiied form oi the device shown in Figs. 5 and 6 I provide a cross-plate 22, having upwardly-projecting lateral extensions 23, provided with openings to receive l Having thus described 'my invention, I i
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- y l1. In combination with a fishing-rod having a reel-seat, a reel having sides, a base-l plate secured to said sides and projecting.
laterally therebeyond, and means for pi\ otally attaching said base-plate to said reel-` seat.
2. A reel, comprising a body having sides, a *base-plate rigidly mounted upon said sides and extending laterally therebeyond, a cross-plate adapted to be removably attached to a fishing-rod, and means for pivotally mounting said base-plate upon said cross-plate.
3. A reel comprising a body having sides,
a base-plate rigidly mounted upon said sides and extending laterally therebeyond, a
cross-plate adapted to be removably attached to afishing-rod and having a stud and stops, said cross-plate being adapted to be mounted upon said st-ud, and means for pivotally securing said base-plate to said cross-plate.
4. A reel comprising a body having sides, a base-plate rigidly mounted upon said sides and extending 'laterally therebeyond, a cross-plate adapted to' be removably attached to a fishing-rod and having ledges transversel of said cross-plate, and means lfor pivota y securing said base-plate to said cross-plate between said ledges, whereby said ledges are adapted to constitute stops to limit the movementof said base-plate.
5. A reel comprising a body having sides, a base-plate secured to said sides and projecting laterally therebeyond, a cross-plate adapted to be removably attached to a fishing-.rod and' having transverse ledges constituting stops, an( means for pivotally attachingl said base-plate to said cross-plate between said ledges, said ledges having inner edges of opposite inclination whereby the edges of said base-plate are in contact lwith the inner edges of said ledges when the reel is set at an angle Wit-h the'iishing-rod.
In testimony Whereo'I have signedv my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribinor witnesses.
TRAC? VERE BUCKIYALTER.
