Description
PATENTED JAN, 29, 1907.
J O MITCHELL GATE CATCH.
APPLIOA ION FILED mm: 25 1906 JAMES O. MITCHELL, OF BASIC CITY, VIRGINIA.
GATE-CATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 29, 1907.
Application filed June 25,1906. Serial No. 323,334.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES O. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Basic City, in the county of Augusta and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Catches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in catches for gates; and the object of the invention is to produce a sim-' ple and efficient device of this nature comprising two spring-pressed dogs, one of which is adapted to yield when the gate is swung in one direction to allow the same to close, while the other acts as a stop to limit the swinging movement of the gate in one direction and vice versa as the gate is swung in the opposite direction.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and combination and arrangement of parts, which will be here inafter fully described and then specifically described in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which in Figure 1 I have shown a perspective view of my improved gate-catch. Fig. 2 is a top plan view showing one of the dogs depressed and the other in position acting as a'stop to limit the throw of the gate, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view longitudinally through the two dogs and the casing therefor.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a casing adapted to be fasten ed horizontally to a gatepost B. Said casing is provided with a longi tudinal channel C, through the walls of which are mounted the pivot-pins D. E E design ate catches or dogs, which are pi votally mounted upon each of said pivot-pins within the channel of the casing. Each one of said catches has a curved finger D at one end thereof, which is adapted to have a play through a slot A formed in the bottom of said channel and through which the finger is guided as the catch is tilted upon its pivot. A pin K is fixed in the end of each finger of said catches and is adapted to limit the outer throw of said catch by the other coming in contact with the rear face of said casing. Mounted in the countersunken portion of the bottom wall of the channel part of the casing are the pivot-pins N, and O O designate springs, which in the present instance are shown as being coiled each about one of said pivot-pins N, one end of the spring bearing against the inclined bottom wall of the recess upon which the pivot-pin is mounted and the other arm bearing against the shank portion of the catch and serving to normally hold the same at its farthest outward throw. The outer marginal edges of the walls of said channeled portion are in clined from the central notch or recess J toward the ends of the casing, and the outer edges of the catches are adapted to be flush with said inclined edges when one or the other of said catches is compressed within the channel, accordingly as the gate is closed from one direction or the other. As the gate closes the latch T upon the gate will engage the recess J formed in the walls and be held closed, the gate being prevented from swinging beyond the recess J by the other latch being interposed in advance of the gate, forming a stop therefor. When the gate is swung in the opposite direction, the other latch not thrown back into the channel will also serve as a stop to limit the swinging of the gate in that direction.
What I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A gate-catch comprising a plate having two parallel flanges spaced apart and projecting from one face thereof, each of said flanges having centrally-disposed notches which are in registration with each other, and said plate being provided with apertures between the flanges in the bottom Wall thereof, catches pivotally mounted between said flanges and each having a curved finger adapted to be guided through an aperture in the bot-tom of the plate, a pin carried by each end of the finger and adapted to limit the outer throw of the catch, and a spring mounted between the flanges and adapted to normally hold said pins against the under surface of said plate, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES O. MITCHELL.
